Product Description

The Spirit Indestructible is the fifth album from Canadian multi-platinum singer and songwriter Nelly Furtado. Furtado co-wrote each song on the album, which, in keeping with her musically eclectic nature, finds her working with an array of collaborators from across the musical spectrum, including hip-hop songwriter-producer Salaam Remi (Furtado’s "The Night is Young", Nas), pop songwriter-producer Rodney Jerkins (Michael Jackson, Beyonce and Lady Gaga), veteran metal producer Bob Rock (Metallica), Dutch DJ and EDM producer Tiesto, rock songwriter and producer John Shanks, and Jamaican reggae producer Da Genius.

I was browsing the web when I came across an ad for The Spirit Indestructible, and having been unaware the album was out I gave it a listen. From then on I've been listening to it constantly. I was completely shocked to read that sales of this album are extremely low in the UK and the US, and it's being written off as a failure. It most certainly isn't. Someday people are going to discover this album like I have and ask themselves, "How could I have missed this?"

Rhythm and haunting washes of synths, backed with complex, desolate background arrangements, and Furtado's unshowy, expressive vocals, make these tracks into a cohesive, whole album, not just a collection of random single tracks by a multitude of producing teams. I'm thinking particularly of the chants on Big Hoops and the introductory clarion call of Believers (Arab Spring) as two of my personal favourites. The songs that don't make an immediate impression on first listen have grown on me, which is always a good sign - I love music that reveals itself over repeated listens. The additional CD of the deluxe edition is also a great EP that has its own identity.

Critics of the album have criticized its "dated" production - well, I have to disagree. The compressed in-your-face production style beloved by Katy Perry, Pink, etc, may be selling well right now, but the sounds Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins and, on other tracks, Salaam Remi have come up with for Furtado are distinctive and lot more fun to listen to. The album is sonically interesting, it has highs and lows, quiet songs that cast their spell slowly, dance tracks that groove in unexpected unique ways. Nelly, I wasn't really a fan before now, but you've won me over with your spirit.

I've lover her since she released her first single. Admittedly, I wasn't overly keen on her debut but loved Folklore - such a beautiful and organic sounding album. Then came the commercial Loose which was packed with hits and brought the recognition she deserved. This album, takes the energy of Loose and the authentic of Loose and produces something magnificent.

When I first played the album I didn't take to the mixture of sounds, but after playing it throughout I came to love it. The album starts with big beat let numbers like the infectious title track and follows on with tracks like Parking Lot, which combines an infectious melody with pounding beats. High Life is a personal highlight and would of served a better lead single rather than the sometimes annoying Big Hoops. The album then takes a turn with more mid-tempo songs such as Bucket List and Miracles and then features some darker songs such as Enemy. The standard album ends on a high with Believers which is catchy and sounds like an already established anthem. But, if you're gonna buy the album pay the extra and get the deluxe version as some of the best songs, like End of the World are featured. Another personal favourite.

All in all its a solid album well worth 5 stars. Just a shame the album didn't match up to its more commercial predecessor as it is a more superior and mature album.

Buy it, you won't be disappointed.

I received the new Nelly Furtado album in the post from Amazon today. From the moment the album started I was completely hooked! An excellent new sound, tons of very bassy bass, great for turning it up loud and blowing away all the cobwebs. I've listened to it three times already and just had to write a review as it is not often one can listen to an album and like absolutely all of it! Bravo Nelly, it was worth the wait! Glad I bought a second copy for my daughter!!

the long awaited new album.

released on a regular cd (which i will review seperately) this is to let you know that if you buy the 2 cd edition you will not be disappointed and it is well worth the extra few pounds!

the extra tracks are stunning!

"hold up" might sound a bit dodgy for the first 15 seconds but is soon comes into its own

"end of the world" is a beautiful track...similar to "end of the world"

"dont leave me" has a reggae backing but dont be put off it's a great track and nelly sounds fanatastic and the lyrics are great!

two versions of "thoughts" are included, its a great poppy song, i prefer the tiesto remix

"end game" is another beautiful song and could be a single release!

i dont know why the bonus tracks are so good - i can only think nelly wanted to go back to the ethnic roots of "forca" for the album so these had been put aside as they sounded so much like "loose"

i promise if you buy this you will not be disappointed...

Nelly Furtado is always doing something different, this time she focuses on the lyrics and shows that you don't need to work with generic producers and write party songs to make an amazing record.
The Spirit Indestructible is everything a Nelly fan could expect and more.
Give it a chance! This album is a pop masterpiece and deserves some recognition.
BEAUTIFUL.

ive never got an album before, but have always been a big fan of Nelly's songs and her songwriting.
But this is a great varied commercial album, from the upbeat 'Big Hoops' and 'Parking Lot' to the introspective but still dancey 'High LIfe' and the fantastic 'Thoughts' featuring the Kenyan Boys choir. (make sure you pick up the delux version!)
A great pop album from a very underrated singer.
