Book Description

15 Oct 2012
Previously available only in paperback, this is the deluxe edition of one of Kodansha s most popular and respected martial arts titles. The Spirit of Aikido is considered to be one of the key works in print in the martial arts field. As such, Kodansha has decided to make a hardcover edition in common with the many other authoritative Kodansha titles in the category. The mass market edition will remain in print and continue to be available. This book is an excellent resource for anyone who is interested in finding out what makes Aikido so multi-dimensional, or one who would like to understand its ancient roots. The goal of this book is to give the reader a clear understanding of the essence of Aikido, and to explain the aspirations and motivations of the true practitioners of Aikido. It doesn t discuss movements or wazas in any detail, but rather tries to impart the fundamental nature of Aikido: the harmony of mankind and the universe. Aikido differs from many martial arts in the non-aggressive nature of its movements, and its non-violent attitude. The idea of Aikido is to disperse an attack without harming the attacker, or allowing one s self to come to harm. Written by the direct lineage descendant of the founder of modern Aikido, its authenticity is assured. A must for all martial artists who seek the truth that lies beyond the physical. KEY ELEMENTS: **Considered the masterwork of Kisshomaru Ueshiba (1921-1999), son of the founder of aikido and himself revered as an embodiment of aikido s spirit. **Regarded as a seminal work on aikido and martial arts in general. **Now in the same hardcover format as KI s other key martial arts titles. **New photos added to this edition, as well as a preface written by Moriteru Ueshiba, the third and present Aikido Doshu, and son of Kisshomaru. **Offers a concise & systematic explanation of the essence of aikido.

About the Author

Kisshomaru Ueshiba (1921-1999), the second Aikido Doshu, is regarded as a man who embodied the spirit of aikido, as inherited from his father, the founder. He was born in 1921, the third son of Morihei Ueshiba, and graduated from Waseda University in 1946. He became master of the Aikido World Headquarters in 1948, and in 1967 was named chairman of the Aikikai Foundation, the principal Aikido organisation in Japan and overseas. His formal appointment as successor to his father took place in 1969. He held several important posts related to the martial art and was a trustee of the Nippon Budokan, the Hall of the Martial Arts located in central Tokyo. He died in 1999. He was the author of the books 'The Art of Aikido' and 'A Life in Aikido', and was the co-author of 'Best Aikido'. He also wrote the introduction to 'Budo' by his father, Morihei Ueshiba.
