The Sphere Project is the guide for all aid workers and development actors who deploy to the field. It provides the basic minimum standards for humanitarian aid response as agreed by over 400 Government, International and Non-Government Organisations. It covers the humanitarian charter, protection principles, core standards and technical chapters covering Water and Sanitation, Food and Nutrition, Shelter and Health being the determinants of health. This is the third edition of the Sphere Project that has evolved from the lessons learnt in Rwanda in 1994 and now incorporates the lessons from Bosnia, Kosovo, Ethiopia, Banda Ache, Pakistan, Afghanistan and the many more complex humanitarian emergencies (man-made or natural) that aid workers have been involved in over the subsequent 16 years. It is essential reading and to have in your reference material in the field. I have always deployed to the field with a hard copy and more recently an electronic copy in my `back pocket' that has proved invaluable in Bosnia, Iraq, the Ivory Coast and Afghanistan. I will soon deploy again (January 2012) this time to Chad and this 3rd edition will come with me. It is useful at all levels from running programmes in the field to providing advice at Ministry level and constructing aid programmes at USAID/ DFID levels. Individual organisations do have their own minimum standard documents such as MSF's Refugee Health that either have similar or improved standards.
Refugee Health: An Approach to Emergency Situations (Medecins San Frontieres). The Sphere Project is also required reading for successful completion of the Diploma in the Medical Care of Catastrophes.
