Review

Praise for SPELLWRIGHT:

'Blake Charlton has not only invented a fascinating world and peopled it with realistic people and wonderful, grisly monsters, but he has also created one of the few truly original magical systems we've seen in fantasy fiction… I'm fascinated to see what happens next and will be following every word with the absorption of an apprentice spellwright. You will be, too' Tad Williams

'Nicodemus Weal is a protagonist that all of us can identify with. SPELLWRIGHT features a unique system of magic and characters that are genuine inhabitants of that world. SPELLWRIGHT is a letter-perfect story: an absorbing read and recommended.' Robin Hobb

‘An enthralling tale’ Terry Brooks

Product Description

SPELLBOUND is the second book in acclaimed debut author Blake Charlton’s exciting and original trilogy, following on from SPELLWRIGHT

Francesca DeVega is a successful healer in the city of Avel, wielding magical text to close wounds and disspell curses, but her life is thrown into chaos when a dead patient suddenly sits up and tells her to run. Now Francesca is in the middle of a game she doesn’t understand, one that ties her to the notorious rogue wizard, Nicodemus Weal, and brings her face to face with demons, demigods, and a man she thought she’d never see again.

It has been ten years since Nicodemus Weal escaped the Starhaven Academy, where he was considered disabled and useless, where he battled the demon who stole his birthright and killed his friends. Unable to use the magical languages of his own people, Nico has honed his skills in the dark language of the kobolds, readying himself for his next encounter with the demon. But there are complications: his mentor suffers from an incurable curse, his half-sister’s agents are hunting him, and he’s still not sure what part Francesca DeVega will play. He certainly doesn’t know what to make of Francesca herself….

Introducing new twists to the unique magical system of Spellwright and uncovering more sinister dangers, Spellbound is sure to please Blake Charlton’s fans and earn him new ones.

A fantasy novel that is the second volume in a series. Which began with Spellwright. Whilst there is a fair amount of exposition in this one that could get new readers well enough up to speed, you are probably better off starting with that book.

The fantasy world of this series has a pretty interesting magic system. Where words are power and can be made to fly off the page. Literally. Book one introduced us to Nicodemus. Who hadn't fulfilled a prophecy all about him because he's dyslexic, so reading spells isn't easy for him.

This is book two, which picks up his story ten years after the events of the first novel. It runs for four hundred and nine pages and is divided into fifty two chapters plus an epilogue.

Nicodemus isn't the only viewpoint character here, though, as the story brings in a new major character. A healer called Francesca. Introduced via one of the best opening sentences to a book I've come across in a very long time. She finds herself caught up in the goings on that centre around Nicodemus, and being reunited with an old acquaintance at the same time.

Neither of them are sure who to trust. And they're not the only ones with problems. As some bigger schemes slowly become apparent...

Whilst the main idea is wonderfully original a lot of the rest of this can at times feel like nothing you've not come across before if you've read a lot of what this genre has to offer. So the book does take a little while to get going. But at the same time it does bring in some more decent concepts and imagery - often involving flying things - and the relationship between Francesca, Nicodemus and her old acquaintance is very well drawn indeed.

It's not a book that can be skimmed as there is a lot of detail to the writing, but ultimately it is worth the effort. Thanks to some good surprises and big developments in the overall story of this series, which come in the final third or so of this one.

So all in all it's a good continuation of the series. And it really should make you want to know what will happen next.

Couldn't put it down. 26 Aug 2011
By Gareth Wilson - Falcata Times Blog TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Hardcover
I love a good book and when I originally read the first story by Blake, Spellwright, I found a world that was novel, was innovative and was also a tale that glued me to a world that was solidly built. What this, the second book does for the reader is continue to build on what has gone before, brings a lead character that has a disability to the fore and whilst a lot of his struggles are personal, the overall arc really takes the tale to a new level.

For me, this is one of my favourite new fantasy series and as such it's one that not only deserves but should demand the readers time, finally wrap that up in a whole world of imagination that marks this author as one to watch and it's a title that really has left me with a thirst for more.

This is way better than the 1st in the series so i am looking forward to the next one. Additional characters have added to the story particularly Francesca and Vivien.
