I do really like this version of the Sixth Doctor. The holy terror is a terrific story, and The spectre of... is also very good. Colin Baker clearly loved the opportunity Big Finish has provided him to redeem his Doctor, and gives a great performance here. And Nicholas Courtney gives another superb performance as the good old Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart. After so, so many years in the role, I guess he is so fond of the character, that he simply cannot give a bad performance. and, besides, he si the one who saves the day. The story has the blend of creepy terror and sci-fi so Dr. Who-esque, and the supporting cast is fine. Very good music, and good sound effects (With top marks to the voice of the Imp).

The Spectre of Lanyon Moor, written and directed by Nicholas Pegg, is another strong outing for Big Finish's mellower version of Colin Baker's Sixth Doctor and his new middle-aged companion Dr. Evelyn Smythe. Set on the bracken-filled expanses of the Cornish moorlands (which are portrayed well by Big Finish's signature use of good sound effects), the story puts on an initially creepy turn before eventually resolving itself in the manner of traditional Doctor Who sci-fi.
It's a little disappointing that the story couldn't retain a creepier atmosphere from start to finish, but this is made up for my the excellent supporting cast, not least of which is the plummy Nicholas Courtney returning to his role as the Brigadier (now retired). Other performances of note would be Toby Longworth as the gruff Professor Morgan and Susan Jameson in a marvellously over the top turn as the eccentric Mrs. Moynihan, who walks across the moor with her army of dogs.
All the characters play their part in the story, but props to the Brig for the pivotal role he plays in the final act!

This is the ninth release from Big Finish in their range of audio only adventures starring classic Doctor Whos. It stars Colin Baker as Six and Maggie Stables as Evelyn. There are four episodes, roughly 25 minutes each, complete with original theme music between each, and cliff hanger endings. Two episodes per disc on 2 discs, and a short booklet with some notes from the author.
The Doctor and Evelyn land on a foggy Cornish moor, and are soon involved in an adventure revolving around an archaeological dig, hobgoblins and a modern day warlock. It's a cracking adventure that nicely evokes the feel of the TV series. The main event however is the welcome return of Nicholas Courtney as the Brigadier, in his first meeting with Six, the only Doctor with which he did not appear on the TV. He steps right back into the part, and provides the Doctor with the solid back-up that he so relied upon during the Pertwee years. Baker and Courtney have a clear chemistry between them, and it easy to believe when they first meet that they are indeed old friends. There is a neat ending that shows how much the Doctor has rubbed off on the Brig, and nicely anticipates the ending of Battlefield. As well as Nicholas Courtney there is a very welcome star turn from James Bolam as the local Baronet, in a role he clearly relished. His turn is an absolute delight to listen to.
In all an excellent production, made even better by the reassuring tones of the Brig. 5 stars.

A good story it was good to hear from the Brig again it was nice to have six and the Brig meet at last i think that the fact that revenge is proved to always be useless this story... Read more
