4.0 out of 5 stars Nice unusual slant. 9 Dec 2013

I really liked the fact that this was written with an alternate history at it's core.

It gave the story a slant that is all but usual.

This book however served more to introduce characters and the alternate history part that attracted me was a bit glossed over.

Still a good read for sure and an entertaining one. What more do you need?

If your are looking for a quick old school spy game with a little political maneuvering, this one is for you. Not to heavy on action, more motivations and strategic positioning. But well written.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent spy story with an alternative history twist. 17 April 2014

There is a group of elite operatives in the CIA. They have to go into potentially hostile territory to try and retrieve an ally after his cover has been blown.

This short story had a lot of work to do. It serves as an introduction to a new series, so it needed to present the main characters and show their world. It has the feel of an old World War II spy novel but set in modern day. That is because the war didn't quite go like it did in our world. Germany didn't lose. There was an armistice. So France is a puppet of the Nazis, Russia is still a Soviet State, and of course Germany is run by the Reich still. It makes for some interesting changes in politics.

The problem is that the reader doesn't get a lot of information about those changes in the story. I got most of the details from the description of the book. There were bits and pieces in the story but if I had not been aware it was an alternative history story before reading it, I would have felt lost.

Overall, I would still recommend this story. I look forward to seeing the world explored more and to find out more about the characters.
