5.0 out of 5 stars They will be MORE traveled now! 4 Nov. 2011
By Natalie M. - Published on
Apparently I have been paying WAY too much for a massage! I got this book, and tried one of the Chinese Foot Massage places. For $40 I got a 70 minute reflexology/acupressure/deep tissue massage. It was incredible! And I would never have tried the venue without this book. Now I can't wait to try more of the spas reviewed.

I think one of the best things about this book is that it explains what each type of ethnic massage entails (Chinese, Thai, Korean, etc.) so you know what to expect plus there's even a few phrases (hello, thank you) in each language. The book would even be helpful if you didn't live in Los Angeles, just for that information. And if you DO live in LA, then welcome to the world of ethnic massage!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great resource for planning a day of indulgence! 4 Nov. 2011
By Amazon Customer - Published on
Have you ever wondered what really is going on in some of those places? The LA area is full of interesting and somewhat mysterious spas, and this book really lifts the veil. It is full of helpful information about a huge number of little businesses, and gives you the inside scoop on what to expect once you get inside, or if you even want to go inside. The book is well-organized and helps both the neophyte and the spa expert get a handle on where to go and what to expect from the myriad experiences that are available from LA's ethnic offerings, and it is a great resource for searching out establishments that provide good value and some great bargains. Well-researched, with beautiful photographs, the book makes a great gift for friends who need inspiration for a day of relaxation and adventure.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great guide for locals and visitors 4 Nov. 2011
By JulieK - Published on
This book is a must have for any local Angeleno or guest. Very helpful and clear instructions of what to bring, what to leave home, what to expect, and what to enjoy at each of the establishments. I especially like the sections about the licensing and laws relating to massage therapy businesses. Gives me more confidence in selecting the right place based on one's particular needs. I really enjoyed leaning about the cultural norms and customs for each type of massage. Makes me want to go try a few that I never would have thought about before reading the book.
5.0 out of 5 stars A practical and entertaining book about spas... 16 Feb. 2012
By LMDOMINGUE - Published on
This is a great resource and guide for those wanting to explore massage techniques from other cultures without having to travel beyond the L.A. region. The book is well researched and provides practical information aimed at ensuring your spa visit will be enjoyable and free of undesirable surprises. Each entry includes details about the facility, what to expect, services offered, parking, and why the authors like the particular spa. Icons indicate price range, gender restrictions, payment options, whether appointments are necessary, and if food is available on site. This book reads like a travel guide, so whether you actually visit the spas or not, you'll be in store for many entertaining adventures while still in the comfort of your own home. I highly recommend this book and suggest buying a copy as a gift for anyone interested in spas and/or travel and adventure.

5.0 out of 5 stars Much needed resource and pretty too - can't wait! 3 Nov. 2011
By Deedster - Published on
I was going to get a a basket of bath goodies as a gift for a friend, but when I found this book I changed the plan: I got the book and I'm taking the friend for a Thai massage. I'm not a wimp, I'm game for trying all sorts of treatments - but I do like to know what to expect, and that's exactly what The Spa Less Traveled does. It has basic pertinent info: what each type of massage is like; what (if anything) you'll wear; how to tip; etc. plus friendly comments that you can tell are truly from their personal experience - like describing the "feel" of the spa or a specific masseuse to request. I found those little comments particularly useful in choosing places that would be to my liking. There's pretty photography so it makes a good gift book (mostly showing the spas, but a few to show what the different types of massages are like - more of those would be helpful). There are a ton of massage places around and I'm always curious about them, but I've never been sure which are OK and which are skanky or otherwise, um, untoward (especially since I'm not on a Burke-Williams budget), so I love that they've researched and vetted some trustworthy places. I also appreciate that the spas are listed by "type" as well as by area. My caveat is that I admit we haven't had our massage yet but I'll update this review if I find anything that didn't ring true. But as far as I can tell they've really done their homework. Can't wait!
