More About the Author

Dr Arthur Agatston is a cardiologist and an associate professor of medicine at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. He has served on committees of the American Society of Echocardiography, the American College of Cardiology, and the Society of Atherosclerosis Imaging, where he is a founding member of the board of directors. He was recently elected to serve on the board of directors of The American Dietetic Association Foundation.

Dr Agatston has authored over 100 articles and abstracts for scientific journals, including the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, the American Journal of Cardiology and the Annals of Internal Medicine. He has served as an expert consultant to the Clinical Trials Committee of the National Institutes of Health, and he has participated as a speaker, faculty member, and organizer of numerous academic cardiology meetings and symposia.

Along with his renown as a researcher, lecturer, and pioneer in clinical and preventive cardiology, Dr Agatston is best known publicly as the author of the best-selling The South Beach Diet.

Where It All Began
Raised on the north shore of Long Island, New York, Dr Agatston's father and grandfather were doctors, and Arthur Agatston knew from an early age that he also desired a career in medicine. After graduating from New York University School of Medicine and completing his cardiology fellowship at NYU, Dr Agatston elected to combine academics with clinical practice. He accepted a position at Mt. Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach, which was associated with the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.

Where It's Led
Over the years, Dr Agatston's pioneering work in non-invasive cardiac imaging has resulted in computerized tomography scanning methods and measures that bear his name: the Agatston Score and the Agatston Method, which are used for screening coronary calcium and are recognized worldwide.

As a practising cardiologist, Dr Agatston did not set out to develop a weight-loss plan. But he did create what became known as the South Beach Diet in the mid-1990s to help his patients whose weight and blood chemistries were not improving on the standard, low-fat American Heart Association diet. His balanced approach became the basis for The South Beach Diet, his first non-academic book, which became an international best seller. Subsequent books published under The South Beach Diet franchise also became bestsellers in the US, including: The South Beach Diet Cookbook (2004); The South Beach Diet Good Fats Good Carbs Guide (2004); The South Beach Diet Quick & Easy Cookbook (2005); and The South Beach Diet Dining Guide (2005). His next two books were The South Beach Diet Parties & Holidays Cookbook (October 2006) and The South Beach Heart Program: The 4-Step Plan that Can Save Your Life (January 2007).

Where It's Going
In 2004, Dr Agatston founded The Agatston Research Foundation for the purpose of conducting and funding original research on diet, cardiac and disease prevention. The Foundation is dedicated to improving the heart health and wellness of individuals through research, education, and prevention. His goal is to educate and empower both his patients and the public about healthy lifestyle choices and disease prevention, encouraging the practice of such prevention in America and throughout the world. In creating The Agatston Research Foundation, Dr Agatston is fulfilling a personal dream as he continues to 'change the way America eats'.

Dr Agatston lectures extensively on prevention both nationally and internationally and has served as a reviewer for major medical cardiology journals. In addition to his work with his wife, Sari, on the South Beach Diet and The Agatston Research Foundation, Dr Agatston maintains a cardiology practice in Miami Beach, where they reside. The Agatstons have two sons currently attending college.

Most of us have tried various diets and have been disappointed in them after a while.
Well, this one works. Basically, it is an essence of all the things we have known all the way about the wrong and the right ways to eat, but have never been given the exact guidelines on how to get to the right place.
By following this program, which has been created by a famouse cardiologist, you will get a step-by-step guide on how to:

-break your bad eating habits
-free yourself from carbs addiction and cravings
-lose weight without going hungry
-achieve better health and energy levels
-feel good about yourself.

If you want to do yourself good, this is the way to do it. I have been following the South Beach Diet for a month now, and people are constantly commenting on my radiant looks and the improvements in my figure. After just one week I was wearing clothes that I thought I had said good-bye to forever! But the most amazing thing is that my husband, who hates any kind of discomford and restrictions associated with a diet, has become an adept and is thrilled to be reducing the lenght of his belt by a notch every couple of weeks.
This is a diet that has a sound medical background, brings amazing results and creates a minimum of discomfort. I recommend it to everyone who wants to lose weight and become a healthier and happier person. Enjoy!

This book contains everything you need to know to enable you to loose weight, stabilise your blood sugar levels, combat cravings and live a healthy lifestyle - it even has an achievable 'bitesize' exercise program included. It includes lots of testimonials from people who have followed the diet with success and covers a comprehensive amount of the 'science' behind the whole concept. Overall I've found it an interesting read and although I found the actual diet a bit 'faffy' if you use the principle of the diet and adapt it to your lifestyle and eating preferences it is a enlightening journey!

The Phase One part of the diet is inspired! No carbs/fruit for two weeks which was an interesting theory - but it works ... no cravings, no hunger, no 'empty feeling' and no sleepless (hungry) nights! A bit of a breakthrough at the start of a diet.

I think this book is a well worth a read - especially at this price - and whether you follow the plan to the letter, or simply apply parts of it to your current eating habits/exercise regime you will definitely find yourself all the better for it!

Take it from me, I have tried every diet going - Twice! Being over weight is not easy and I heard about this book from a work colleague who had lost 4 stones on it and he looked amazing.
I bought the books and within the first 2 weeks I had lost 1 stone (just as he did).
3rd week things slowed down but still lost 3lbs and I am nearing the end of week 4 and my clothes are hanging off me!
I am not saying it is easy, losing weight never is, but there is no weighing of food, no portion restrictions (eat till you feel satisfied. I will admit the first couple of weeks I had sore heads but that is all explained in the book (your body is coming off sugar and not liking it).
Now, I do not crave sweets or chocolate which is a first that I can remember and I have more energy.
I would advise anyone who needs to loose weight whether it be a few pounds or in my case several stones to buy this book and try it, get past the first two weeks and you will not regret it.
Added bonus to me is that it concentrates on tummy fat, that is where you see the difference first! BUY THE BOOK!!!

I was intending to write something in detail on here but the previous reviewer beat me to it, and I agree with it completely. My partner and I have just completed the first week of Phase 1, I have 5 stone to lose in total and have lost 1Ib per day so far, she has a stone and a half or so to lose and has lost 3lb this week. I appreciate we should not and probably cannot continue to lose weight at this pace but knocking off a stone in two weeks makes for a huge boost for the lenghthier Phase 2 to follow ( please don't mention its probably all just water, I couldn't care less,I've not noticed the medical profession knocking a stone off your weight because "its just water" when they weigh you in the surgery before the lecture begins). I cannot stress enough that you do not and must not be hungry on this diet, even in phase one. We're eating some very healthy food and I don't feel remotely deprived, the only thing that we've both found a little difficult to manage in Phase one are the breakfasts which tend to be cooked and involve eggs in a variety of forms which even after a week becomes a little tedious but frankly if thats all I have to worry about for a 1lb a day weight loss then I fine with the eggs, apart from anything else there is the possibility of having cereal again in Phase 2. I've tried Atkins ( this is NOT a watered down Atkins) and actually put weight on. I've been an on-line member of weight watchers for longer than I care to remember and know my points inside out, I flirted briefly with Tesco diets and then investigated having diet food delivered, I've lost weight and put it back on, never very much lost and then put on more than before...familar to anyone? However I could keep eating like this for ever and apart from a short term egg thing I cannot criticise the approach at all.Read more ›
