Book Two of the Witching Savannah series

Graceful trees and historic buildings fill Savannah, Georgia, but beneath the city's Southern splendor, its supernatural roots run deep. The members of local witch families grace the society pages...when they're not secretly protecting their magical work from dark forces.

Savannah resident Mercy Taylor may now be in control of the South's most powerful family of witches, but she's struggling to master her newfound magic. Pregnant with her first child and still reeling from a heartbreaking betrayal, she just wants to be able to use her supernatural abilities without accidentally destroying dishes or blasting the doors off buildings.

But when Mercy's long-presumed-dead mother suddenly returns, begging Mercy to keep her presence under wraps, the witch wonders how many secrets her family is hiding...and who she can really trust. And when the danger around her intensifies to deadly levels, Mercy knows she must discover the truth behind her family's magic—before it destroys her.

The second book in J.D. Horn's Witching Savannah series, The Source casts a thrilling spell.

About the Author

J.D. Horn was raised in rural Tennessee and has carried a bit of its red clay with him while traveling the world, from Hollywood to Paris to Tokyo. He studied comparative literature as an undergrad, focusing on French and Russian in particular. He also holds an MBA in international business and worked as a financial analyst before becoming a novelist. When not writing, he is likely running, and he has race bibs from two full marathons and about thirty half marathons. He and his spouse, Rich (proud father of Rebecca and Madeline), along with their three pets, split their time between Portland, Oregon, and San Francisco, California.

4.0 out of 5 stars Gimme gimme more 3 Jun 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
The Source is another of my most anticipated books. Yes I know I have a lot of those, but I love a lot of series, and find lots of new ones every day! I loved The Line, I wasn't expecting the amazingness that was that book when I started reading, and I was sad to finish it. I honestly could not wait for this book, and I was so psyched NetGalley had it available to request!

When we rejoin Mercy, she's in charge but she's struggling to control her new powers. Not to mention she also has to deal with being pregnant, and that whole heartbreaking betrayal shabang. As if she wasn't stressed enough, her mother, who's been thought to be dead for years, pops back up. Cue trust issues with the family, and a quest for truth!

Once again, I loved the setting of the book, the author writes about it so vividly, you can practically believe you're there, with the sun shining down on your face. It's a world that's written so realistically, you feel like you've actually been there, and you never want to leave! I was so pleased that was still going strong in this book.

Mercy, I was worried about. A lot of times in sequels, the characters suffered, but Mercy continued to be one of my favourite characters. She was just as strong as she was in the first book, and I loved that. Personally, I'm surprised she didn't have a mental break down, if I was in her situation, I'd probably have curled in to the fetal position with a tub of Ben and Jerry's and Netflix. Peter was still as annoying to me as he was in the first book. I don't like his character, I feel like he's not the right love choice, but he seems to be capable of change, so we'll see.

5.0 out of 5 stars Family Secrets Abound 11 Jun 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
This series must be read in order. The first book is The Line (Witching Savannah, Book 1). This is the second book.

Mercy never learned to leave well enough alone. Mysterious messages and secret meetings have her doubting even herself. How is she supposed to trust her family when she knows they have spent most of her life lying to her? She comes to realize the only person she completely trusts is Mother who has no power of her own... only what she can borrow. So when searching madly for her twin she enlists Mother's help and hides her actions and intentions from her family as best she can. Will she ever find her sister? Is her baby safe from the other families? Is she?

True to its southern gothic noir roots this installment is full of intigue and suspense. The romance takes a backseat to the mysteries that abound and the magic that makes them possible. I adore this series and can't wait to read TThe Void (Witching Savannah, Book 3)! Every book is more convoluted and surprising than the last :)

***This series is suitable for adult readers

4.0 out of 5 stars Second verse, carries on the first... 11 Aug 2014

It's particularly hard to take being stabbed in the back close to home. There's always a feeling of betrayal when people of your own group oppose you. - Catharine MacKinnon

You want to believe that there's one relationship in life that's beyond betrayal. A relationship that's beyond that kind of hurt. And there isn't. - Caleb Carr

It is said that those whom the gods wish to destroy they first make mad. - John Boyd Orr

Back in January of this year I received a copy of The Line by J.D. Horn as part of the Kindle First program. The Line is a story of Mercy Taylor, a magical “dud” born into a family of immense magical power. Shunted to the side and mostly ignored by the powerful witches in her family, Mercy enjoys her life leading “The Liars Tour of Savannah,” getting her customers a little buzzed, telling ‘some black and wicked lies about the people of her hometown,” and basically enjoying her life. It’s simple, and it is all hers. Well, mostly happy, except for the fact that she is loved by an apparently good man, yet loves the man who belongs to her twin sister – the twin sister who is in line to take a place as one of the ten who control The Line, the magical wall between this world and the world of demons.

Power and jealousy, mistakes and unforeseen consequences kept me reading The Line all through the night. Now, Mercy and her family are back, in The Source the second in the Witching Savannah series. But things have changed more than Mercy could have ever expected. Once thought a failure, now The Line is Mercy’s responsibility, and no one seems to want that – including the other witches who hold the line between this world and the next.

5.0 out of 5 stars Couldn't put it down 22 Jun 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I really enjoyed both The Source and The Line. They are both beautifully written original books with well rounded characters. The twists and turns are well paced, continually drawing you on to see what happens next. I didn't know what to expect when I started reading but the stories evolve so naturally that I was instantly drawn in and could not put the book down. If you enjoy modern stories with otherworldly tendencies, these books are definitely worth a read.

Did not think I would enjoy this book, as I usually like much more murder mystery investigation stories. This one was really different, but I enjoyed it all the same.
