Biography

Yusef Lateef (b. 1920), a multi-instrumentalist who is equally skilled on tenor saxophone, flute, and oboe, is also a multiculturalist whose musical interests have long gone beyond jazz, a word he disdains. An innovator in mixing world music influences into jazz, Lateef is in his own musical category.

Originally an altoist, Lateef switched to tenor while in high school. He worked early ... Read more in Amazon's Yusef Lateef Store

The multi-instrumentalist Yusef Lateef(1920-2013) recorded this excellent quintet session in Hackensack, New Jersey on October 11, 1957.
With Lateef(tenor saxophone, flute, argol, tambourine) were Wilbur Harden(flugelhorn, balloon); Hugh Lawson(piano, Turkish finger cymbals, 7-Up bottle, balloon, bells);Ernie Farrow(bass, rabat) & Oliver Jackson(drums, Chinese gong, earth-board).
Highlights of the five varied and atmospheric tracks are a lengthy version of Billy Strayhorn's 'Take The "A" Train' with fine flute playing from Lateef, 'Love and Humor' which makes effective use of balloons & a 7-Up bottle(!) and 'Buckingham', a showcase for Lateef's tenor saxophone.
Despite the short playing-time of less than 32 minutes 'Sounds of Yusef' is an enjoyable example of the inventive and Eastern-influenced modern jazz Lateef was playing in the late 1950s.

Out of Print on CD - an avant jazz classic from 1957 3 Mar. 2008
By Lil Mike - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Out of print on CD & vinyl these days, The Sounds of Yusef recorded for Prestige and released in Oct 1957 shows Lateef's blossoming interest in exploring the sounds of the East. This is a predecessor to his classic 1961 "Eastern Sounds" disc. My fave track is the adventurous and experimental "Love and Humor" with it's Chinese gong, Asian style flute lines played by Lateef and a passage of apparently non-traditional instruments like 7-Up bottles and the taught surfaces of balloons stroked til they create that high pitched squeaking kids seem to love way more than adults. Anyhow, it's not all like that, and any traditional jazz fans could still enjoy the melodious opener "Take the 'A' Train".

OKAY 16 April 2014

Not one of the better Lateef recordings. My favorite is Complete Yusef Lateef on Atlantic. That band with Hugh Lawson, Cecil McBee and Roy Brooks I heard many times at Slugs'. I also dig the one under his name on the Charlie Parker label. Yusef told me it was not his date but the trumpet player's, Vincent Pitts. Yusef plays only tenor, short solos and kills!
