Their modern arrangements of traditional klezmer tunes are wonderful but it is only when you listen to Kroke play their own compositions, as they do on this album, that you realize this band's potential. After listening to it I see the band not as a Jewish folk ensemble, but as a modern jazz trio. Their songs have echoes of Philip Glass, Ornette Coleman, Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd to name a few.

While they push the boundaries of musical genres, they still manage to maintain their distinct identity. The album could have been called Sounds From The Diaspora. At times you think you are in Bosnia or Romania. At other times it feels like you are in Russia, or India even.

"Time" and "Water" are my favorite compositions on the album. BBC World Service DJ Charlie Gillet played "Time" on his show. "Water" displays some extraordinary violin solos that I, as a blues/rock guitarist, wish I could have come up with.

Five stars aren't enough for this album.

This has been played at least twice on Late Junction, since which I've been addicted and bought all the Kroke records. Hope they come back to play live in the UK.

A new way in the old world 31 May 2001
By Rob Sadgrove - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
This album is something more than Klezmer music. Kroke are three musicians from Warsaw / Poland that combine a traditional emotion in their music with an intelligence and creativity that achieves something that is truly new. Listening to Kroke demands the ability to let their music flow deep into collective conscience. If ever you have had the desire to fly free in you own fantasy, then this album is your airport. Kroke's music is not easy listening, yet there is a frictionless feeling that lets it slide away. This is music of dreams, old European Jewish dreams and new Global secular dreams. The underlying styles and sounds are the expression of the global world, multi-cultural, alive and kicking, yet still there is the touch of sadness that reminds us of pain both past and present. Thanks to Kroke the world vanishes a little less.

Fantastic music. "Time" is great to dance to--argentine tango--i often play it at milongas and it is always a hit.
