There have been a few Sound of Music books written in the past, but Laurence Maslon's superb book is probably the first of its kind to tell the story in a concise manner. The Hirsch book on the film and the reissued Max Wilk book on the stage show were great books in their own right, but I think this book tops them all. Prof Maslon ought to be thanked and congratulated for offering us this book.
Although the numerous photos are the draw of this coffee-table book, a coffee-table book should offer much more than pretty photographs. For this it certainly delivers. His meticulously researched, well-written text tells us the whole Sound of Music story from Maria's birth to the first Austrian stage production in 2005. This book covers all important stops in the history of Sound of Music up till now, and does not dwell too long on any one time period. An added treat is the inclusion of song lyrics and commentaries on the songs, explaining how they were written and what role they played in the musical. I admit there are a few typo errors in the text, but this well-researched book is jam-packed with facts of the musical. You could literally dip your teeth into it and come out a Sound of Music junkie. I admit there are a few inaccuracies scattered throughout the text, but they don't detract from the book as a whole.
One thought is that it would have been lovely to incorporate the song histories into the body of the text, rather than keep them to the end of the chapter. For instance it would have been good to mention the writing of Edelweiss when the book covers the Boston tryouts. Even so, it's still neat and tidy to find the song histories where they are. And it would have been good to mention the amendments that were made for the film when the book talks about the pre-production, such as the changes that were made to My Favourite Things and Do-Re-Mi, and also the writing of Something Good to replace the original love duet, An Ordinary Couple, which wasn't Rodgers' finest hour.
Maslon's book was originally published in a large-size hardback, but the fortunate thing is that it's here being offered in a smaller, more portable sized edition. It may have its downsides, such as small print, but it's really handy for people to tote it around. Also, this edition has a CD of the film soundtrack. It may be useful to those who haven't got a copy, but for any dedicated fan it won't be necessary.
In short, a really great Sound of Music book that makes a splendid addition to any Sound of Music collection, except that the print tends to be a little too small for the size of the book. Otherwise, a really wonderful book from cover to cover, and a seminal work in the history of this well-loved musical. I think this is a book that deserves to be in print forever.
