Product Description

American bands have never got in the habit of their British counterparts, who tend to release lots of extended singles filled out with not-meant-for-prime-time experimentation. If the Beasties had got into that habit, this would be their B-side compendium: a dozen instrumental tracks showing off their groovier side, complete with plenty of wah peddle on the guitar and prominence given to frequent Beastie collaborators "Money" Mark Nishita (keyboards) and Eric Bobo (percussion). It's tough to believe that the same band is responsible for this and the Aglio e Olio EP, but it goes a long way in explaining how they've remained viable for so long. --Randy Silver

5.0 out of 5 stars The not-so-beastie men... 13 July 2001
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
After hearing this album for the first time I was shocked. I used to like the beastie boys in my not so distant youth, their rude boy lyrics and white-punk rap-rock style; I thought that was what music was all about, the "look at me!", "the big I am!".
However, I discovered that music is about music, the love of music and the Beastie Boys, it seems, have grown up too!
This album is not another celebration of how loud they can shout or in-your-face they can be, this is pure musical talent - genius even. This is beautiful beats with wah-wah guitar, this is funk, it's jazz, this is 'Groove Holmes' - but most of all: this is art!
If you enjoy LISTENING to music more than you enjoy playing it, or have any kind of musical taste buds whatsoever then you will love this album. Ahh the bliss, all those lovely instromental vibes crammed on to one cd - and not a 4/4 beat on the entire album!
This album is sheer joy - but don't take my word for it, go out and buy it! If you don't like it then you probably will in a few years time when you chill out. :-P

5.0 out of 5 stars Sublime 15 Jan 2007
Format:Audio CD
I have been listening to the Beastie Boys for many years and have come to treasure albums such as Ill communication and Check your head. I have listened to those 2 albums over and over again, as well as watching the Sabotage video (truly great) many times. To those people familiar with those 3 works, intermingled with all the fan favourites like Sabotage etc. are some truly chilled out pieces; just percussion, strings and keyboard.

For years I have been trying to track down all of these instrumental versions and now here they are on one album.

To those not accustomed to the full repertoire of the Beastie Boys, these tracks may or may not be a welcomed change. They feel more like the Beastie Boys unplugged, just chilling out and truly expressing themselves solely through their instuments. Very funky, very smooth and of course very classy.

This album is truly a must for any discerning collector and it represents a side of the band that should be applauded.

Had the cd before but it got lost.
Great for those chill out times, good low and cool but also great when loud.

5.0 out of 5 stars the ultimate chill-out jazz-funk album 11 Oct 1999
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
The Beastie Boys are so versatile - in the space of a year they brought out the hardcore thrash EP 'Aglio E Olio' and also 'The In Sound from Way Out', a collection of funky jazz tunes culled from their last few proper albums. There's stuff here from 'Check Your Head' and 'Ill Communication' - presumably other of these tunes were B-sides.
Anyway, you should get this CD even if you hate the Beastie Boys - it just doesn't sound at all like the rest of their 'oeuvre', [man.]

5.0 out of 5 stars funky and phat 10 Jun 2000
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
First thing to note, is that I own only this one beastie boys record, and intend to buy no others in a hurry. This album shows their true musical ability, and is well different from most of their other records. Tracks like pow and big 3's have a wicked bass line, and the drumming on the album is superb if not original, considering its by the boys themeselves. Perhaps the Beastie Boys at their best, I recommend this album to anyone who wants a bit of F U N K in their life.
