We really did speak like that 60 years ago!
A somewhat old-fashioned b&w film charting the post-war rush to break the "sound barrier". Although it comes over as rather quaint these days, the performances by Ralph Richardson, Ann Todd, Nigel Patrick and new boy - Denholm Elliott, are really rather good. The flying scenes are effective, although I would question the verisimilitude surrounding Denholm Elliot's fatal crash on his first solo - no flying instructor I have known (over a long life associated with aviation), be he military or civilian, would have sent a pupil solo unless he was supremely confident in the tyro's ability to get the kite back on the deck in one piece. Even so the accident was necessary to advance the generally creaking plot. But for all its "ground-pounder" failings, the testing of the jet equipment of the day was well worth the entrance fee.
A must see for all pilots and groundcrew of the era (and no doubt the WAAF's they dated!).
