Book Description

24 Jun 2011 The Soulkeepers Series
When fifteen-year-old Jacob Lau is pulled from the crumpled remains of his mother's car, no one can explain why he was driving or why the police can't find his mother's body. Made a ward of his uncle and thousands of miles from home, a beautiful and mysterious neighbor, Dr. Abigail Silva, offers to use her unique abilities to help him find his mom. In exchange, she requires Jacob to train as a Soulkeeper, a gifted warrior charged with protecting human souls. He agrees to her demands, desperate for any clue to the mystery of his mother's disappearance. But soon Jacob finds himself trapped in a web of half-truths, and questions Dr. Silva's motives for helping him.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable, easy read. 18 Dec 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Jacob Lau's world is turned upside down when his mother disappears and he nearly dies in a car crash. His memories of the event are so outlandish that he believes his brain was damaged in the accident. To cap it all off, he discovers he has an uncle he never knew existed and is taken from his home in Hawaii, to live with him.

Jacob has to contend with being the new boy in school, in a close knit town with very few outsiders. He finds a friend in Malini and ends up working for the enigmatic Dr. Silva. He then discovers that there are dark forces at work in the world and he is tied to them.

'The Soulkeepers' is, for the most part, an enjoyable and easy read. Jacob is believable character and you really feel for him as he copes with grief, new surroundings, awakening powers and small minded teenagers in his new high school. The plot unfolds at a reasonable pace and in places can be twisty. The description of the unnatural happenings, events and places are well done. Plus, I loved Gideon the cat!

However, where this book falls down is in its use of exposition. Characters divulge the plot and backstory through lengthy dialogue, leaving very little for Jacob (or the reader) to actually discover. Not everyone will find this a problem, though.

Overall, I did enjoy reading this novel and I would recommend it to people who enjoy young adult urban fantasy. Fans of the Percy Jackson series will probably like this book for the same reasons.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic coming-of-age adventure 6 July 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
The Soulkeepers has a really interesting concept, and it's like nothing I've read before. Jacob seems to be your usual teenager struggling to fit into a new school in a new town after his mother disappears. He has trouble with the "popular crowd" and can't wait to get out of this dull new town that he hates so much. That might seem fairly run of the mill, but not many teenagers begin their books by coming back from the dead. Nor do they see their mothers fighting monsters. Most of all, they're not usually Soulkeepers - Jacob has a mystical bond with, and power over, the element of water. He encounters the local botanist, Dr Silva, who turns out to be a lot more than she appears, and she starts training him up to be able to fulfil his destiny. Along the way, he gets himself a girlfriend in the shape of Malini, a fellow social outcast.

If the word 'soul' gets you thinking that this is probably a bit deeper than your usual "teen with a superpower" fiction, then you'd be right. It's not just about teenagers throwing tantrums and pouting all over the place (are you listening, Bella?) In The Soulkeepers, Jacob encounters questions of faith, both in humanity and in a higher power, and the book really kicks things up a gear when we meet the villains of the piece - the fallen angels. They're a truly nasty bunch, which leads to an amazing setpiece between our hapless heroes and the demons in disguise, but I won't say much more because I don't want to spoil it.

Now, I've always been a sucker for angels but having had a fairly secular upbringing, I'm not overtly keen on religious fiction.

I got the first one as a freebie from Kindle and I enjoyed it that much, that I rushed straight back to Amazon and purchased the 2nd and 3rd ones!

I enjoyed the plot, the easy reading and the way that the hero, Jacob, is a bit of an anti-hero as he isn't your 'All American' nice boy but has issues and problems of his own to deal with as well as trying to work out a whole new family, place and friends all at the same time.

G P Ching's descriptive prose built a fantastical, if not nasty, picture in my mind's eye which is (to me anyway) a sign of a fabulous book.

All in all, I highly recommend it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Good 5 Mar 2013

Like reading about Jacobs story and as I'm nit religious was a little overwhelming with all the religious references but was a very good twist when Jacob decides to believe in his own way which is more relatable for me than if he became a full on true believer. Loved gideons character. I kept in thinking through out the book that it would make a great film but I think it wouldn't be as good as the book but book to movies never are as your own imagination is better than some 40+ year olds imagination. But GP ching very good book! Can't wait to read the next two!
