How much are you willing to pay ?

Product Description

When Nick Spencer stumbles upon Bargains, the odd little back street shop seems like the perfect place to buy the present he's been searching for. And when the shopkeeper wants to take some of Nick's artwork instead of money for payment, he's even happier.

But Nick soon realizes that the deal he's made is not quite the bargain he thought it was. His drawing skills have disappeared, and when he returns to the shop he finds himself trapped into a job he didn't sign up for, collecting debts for the mysterious Mr Grey. As his assignments grow steadily more and more traumatic and the shop takes over more and more of his life, the question becomes not when he'll earn his way out . . . but if he'll ever get out at all.

The Soul Trade is E.E. Richardson's fourth novel and it did not disappoint me. Though I don't think it is as good as The Devil's Footsteps or The Intruders, both of which I loved, it still presented suspenseful and enjoyable read.

Nick Spenser is looking for a birthday present for his step mum and stumbles across Bargains, an old and hidden shop. There he finds thousands of glass orbs, each containing an impossibly real image. The shopkeeper, Mr Grey, offers Nick a trade: an orb for one of his sketches. Nick is more than happy to oblige. But later he finds out that his drawing skills have vanished. But that is just the start of his problems, as he is then forced into working for Mr Grey and his tasks get darker and darker...

This is not a hard read. Being aimed at eleven years plus, the language is not particularly difficult and none of the content is unsuitable. The character Nick is fifteen and I think that if Richardson had aimed it at older readers the story could have been made better so to say. It's all there; the plot is intriguing, the setting is good and the characters are real. But it feels like it's missing something, it's not quite the story it could. Aiming it at older readers, Richardson could have made it darker, and the plot more twisted and more of a horror.

The Soul Trade is a good book. It offers an easy, yet intriguing read. I thoroughly enjoyed it. If you have enjoyed Richardson's other books, then this is well worth trying, and if you haven't, then all I can say is that her books are well worth trying.
