5.0 out of 5 stars Priceless! 2 Feb 2009
Format:Audio CD
For anyone who has an abiding love for the kind of latino soul that was unique to New York in the 60s, this is a CD you simply must have. A heavenly concoction of bugaloo, mambo, r'n'b and salsa, with strong undercurrents of both Jackie Wilson and Frankie Lymon, not to mention a seasoning of the street corner doo-wop that found its most perfect expression in the latin neighbourhoods of the Big Apple, this 20 track treasure is very likely to take up permanent residence in your CD player for many months to come.

Given special access to the vaults of the legendary Fania label as well as the personal collection of the great Bobby Marin, the BGP imprint of Ace records have come up with yet another top quality product. Popular performers such as Joe Bataan, the Lebron Brothers, Ralfi Pagan, Parrish and 125th Street Candy Store rub shoulders with comparatively little known artists such as Ralphi & the Latin Lovers and Olivieri. Throw in some ultra rare waxings by Frankie Nieves, Tony Middleton, Bobby Matos and the Harvey Averne Dozen and you have a lovingly crafted collection that documents a brilliant moment in pop history.

More please!

5.0 out of 5 stars BGP do it again ! 6 May 2009
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Another great comp from Dean Rudland and the BGP gang that proudly fields a whole bunch of vintage latin grooves that sound new and fresh to my ears.

Many of the cheaper comps seem to endlessly recycle tunes from a set list that sees the same song cropping up time and again. Not with this album ! BGP really have a talent for releasing exceptional compilations and it's nice to see one of my favourite genres getting this treatment. I really do hope this album marks the start of a new series.

Three of my favourites songs that nicely represent the album are:"Central Park", "Same Old Sad Song" "Nitty Boo Boo"

Hot!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic compilation - LP vinyl version 31 May 2013
By brad
Format:Vinyl|Verified Purchase
The music on this compilation I thoroughly award 5 stars. It truly is amazing and well worth the purchase and emotional investment. It's hard to definitively categorize the entire compilation though, Latin soul/funk/R&B and are broad terms to give you an idea however it goes beyond that. The stories on the back of the LP are an interesting read in to the brief time that this music survived in the late 1960's and early 1970's.

However, I am not happy that my "new" vinyl copy was not sealed when it arrived. This may seem petty but when purchasing vinyl online I am at the mercy of the description which described this as new. The LP quality is superb in 180 gram which is to be expected and showed no signs of scuffs and marks, although the usual small pieces of the annoying white paper used as inner sleeves were present they are easy to handle. I've never bought a brand new vinyl record with the white paper that didn't have this. Those buying the CD version should just ignore this paragraph though.

Make this an essential purchase.

4.0 out of 5 stars Leicester Bangs Review (2009): 28 Mar 2011
By Leicester Bangs TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD
Various Artists - The Soul Of Spanish Harlem (BGP / Ace Records)
The latest in a long line of excellent soul collections to emerge from BPG / Ace, The Soul Of Spanish Harlem compiles the explosion of Latin soul that sprang from East Harlem in the mid to late 1960s.

Many of the tracks are ultra rare recordings that sold poorly at the time of their original release and have been sought out by collectors ever since. I can't say Latin Soul features heavily in my record collection, which is one of the reasons I appreciate what compiler Dean Rudland has done here. Ralphi Pagan's "Ain't No Big Thing" breaks the ice with a certified floor filler, but you'll find yourself moving around the parquet to most of the stuff here. The majority of the bands and artists represented were of Cuban and Puerto Rican extraction, and they bring a wealth of influences to these recordings, but without forgetting the huge shadows cast by Stax and Motown.

Put it on at a party and be prepared to answer eager enquiries. Fortunately, thanks to Rudland's informative sleevenotes, I know a considerable bit more about Latin soul than I did a week ago and, as with all BGP / Ace releases, the sound and overall presentation is first class. 8/10.
