Book Description

Dr. Sam Johnson is a well-respected psychologist in the small town of Dunston, Iowa. He knows intimate details about almost everybody in town, and this causes more than a little resentment. When a few angry people turn the table and begin prying into Dr. Johnson's own dark past, a terrifying chain of events is set into motion. At once a psychological mystery and a chilling character study, Jackson Meek's audacious novel The Soul Plumber is sure to haunt its readers for years to come.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Solid Homage to Jim Thompson 15 Jan. 2013
By Warren Moore - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
One look at the cover lets the reader know he or she has entered pulp country. In this case, it happens to be in Iowa, where Dr. Sam Johnson (the novel's first-person narrator) has hung up his shingle as a psychologist/counselor after relocating from New York for unspecified reasons (heh heh heh...) As he has gotten to know his patients, he exploits their weaknesses while trying to keep at least some of his own darker urges under control -- or at least below the radar. Unfortunately, an attractive young patient makes the scene, and Johnson's control slips with devastating results for all concerned.

Meeks's style is smooth and readable, and Johnson's voice is a solid one. While all books of this sort owe a considerable debt to the great Jim Thompson, _Soul Plumber_ occasionally verges on pastiche. That said, it's a nice read with the necessary frissons of creepiness. I'll keep an eye out for subsequent works, and you should as well.
