O V Wright would not normally be one of the first names mentioned in any debate on the greatest of all soul singers but he is surely up there with them all. Originally signed to the legendary Memphis label Goldwax, Wright was found to have a prior contract with Duke Robey's Peacock and was 'persuaded' by Robey to cut his ties with Goldwax. This did him no harm however as he proceded to record some of soul music's finest sides. Backed by a classic organ dominated rhythm the gospel trained Wright laid down some of the most impassioned vocals in the entire soul canon. Cuts such as A Nickel And A Nail and Id Rather Be Blind Crippled And Crazy testify to this most gifted of singers. By all accounts O V was a difficult and troubled man and died prematurely in 1980.
