Product Description

The Soul Collectors is a chilling new instalment in the Darby McCormick series from Chris Mooney.

Ten years ago CSI Darby McCormick investigated a sinister child abduction case.

Today, the missing child is back from the dead and holding his family hostage.

He makes only one demand. Bring me Darby McCormick ...

Charlie Rizzo has his family at gunpoint and when Darby arrives to defuse the scene, she finds him horrifically mutilated, with a mask of human skin sewn in place over his own face. Within minutes, a group of men disguised as SWAT officers bursts in and releases deadly Sarin gas, killing the Rizzo family outright and leaving Darby herself barely alive.

Where has Charlie Rizzo been held all these years? Who are The Twelve who have been executing this gruesome torture? And why are the FBI running scared in the face of this particular, chilling episode? Darby is facing the toughest case of her career ... and, as the body count rises, one that will bring her into great personal danger and leave her in fear of losing her mind, if not her soul. For the Soul Collectors are the monsters from your worst nightmares.

Following the success of earlier titles in the series including The Dead Room and The Missing, The Soul Collectors sees Darby McCormick take on her most terrifying case yet. Chris Mooney revisits of his earlier disappearances Charlie Rizzo in this startling crime novel. Fans of Tess Gerritsen, Karin Slaughter and Michael Connelly will love Chris Mooney.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not just another FBI thriller 4 Nov 2010

I had never read Chris Mooney before but followed my Amazon recommendation and took a chance. I was not disappointed. This exciting thriller holds the reader from start to finish - I really must stop beginning to read at was so hard to put down but I managed to finish it the next day. This book is certainly thriling and complex - all the elements for a really good detective novel. I recommend this to anyone who likes a good Deaver thriller! The Soul Collectors

3.0 out of 5 stars An unreal thriller. 26 Jan 2011
By KarlB
I was unaware of Chris Mooney until I took a chance on Soul Collectors based on the cover and blurb whilst browsing the book section of the local supermarket. Although not of the usual genre that I read (being mostly horror, something which Mooney may be a fan of too since he name-drops Stephen King at least twice in this book) it appeared gruesome enough for it to sit within my comfort zone - in this regard I was not disappointed. Sticking with the positives; I believe Mooney to be a capable author and the book hurtles along at a fast pace with plenty of action along the way. Although I understand this book to be Darby's fourth outing, to Mooney's credit, the story does stand alone; I never felt bemused by the numerous mentions to her past. Certainly, it was entertaining enough to keep me reading it from beginning to end.

On to the negatives and the reasons for only 3 stars. I appreciate a certain amount of poetic license in order to create a gripping and entertaining story but, just as other reviewers have mentioned, everything about this book is simply unbelievable. From the indestructible female lead who may as well have been a cyborg; to the evil, kidnapping and murderous cult that have operated undetected for decades. Also I fear for the safety of the USA if its Secret Service and FBI are anything like their depiction in the book, apparently not one member is a match to Darby either intellectually or in combat. As for Mooney likening characters to actual movie stars, at best its lazy writing otherwise it could be considered a blatant attempt to solicit a movie option and even going so far as to cast the characters.

Like me, Mooney appears to have had no idea how the story would end so we are left with the final 50-100 pages hurriedly written with no conclusion.

3.0 out of 5 stars really disappointing 26 Nov 2010
Very talented writer but this is so overblown that it just loses all credibility and I just flipped through the second half. I loved Mr Mooneys first books but I wish he had never seen CSI.

2.0 out of 5 stars Lara Croft takes on 'Resident Evil' 31 Jan 2011
Despite a promising start this book (my first - and last - Chris Mooney) quickly descends in to generic computer game rubbish....

The premise was interesting and the first of couple of chapters particually reviting. However, the moment that the lead character 'Darby McCormack' (a doctor, no less) is described as looking like Angelina Jolie the plot sinks to farce. She's a Lara Coft-arse-kicking-sexy-single-white-female-doctor-knowitall-control-mad-expert-on-everything-more-clever-than-any-man-super-hero....(get the picture). She beats up random FBI goons, out-smarts the smartest villians and is generally to clever for her own good. She's completely unbelievable as a character and, consequently, cannot be invested in by the reader.

The timeline is ridiculous - a week? fortnight? month? bi-yearly? who knows. Darby is the ONLY female character in the whole book and the 'demons' (how else do you explain the bad guys who, in fact, are never properly explained - I wonder if a sequel is on the works?) are, initially menacing, but later unchallenging (superhero Darby even manages to dispose of two baddies despite being starved and beaten while locked underground for days while chained to the floor - her amazingness knows no bounds). The reason 'why' is never developed, which was my only hope throughout reading the book and worst of all, despite a story centered on child abduction and torture, the author actually introduces a lovestory!!!! Seriously, kidnap and death is sidelined for pages while Darby invests herself in regenerating an old romance. Tosh!

The book was vaguely enjoyable and a relatively quick read (thankfully) so I've been over generous and given two stars. This however will be my last Chris Mooney and I sincerely hope that I never hear of Darby McCormack again!!!

This is a fantastic read and luckily I read deviant ways first not that this is necessary but it was about jack Casey and his wife Taylor. I can't wait for the next instalment of either the Malcolm Fletcher or the Darby McCormick series by Chris Mooney
