Book Description

9 Feb 2010
Deep down, inside our bodies, lives the soul. No one has ever seen it, but we all know it's there. There is a 'soul bird' who lives inside us all. This special bird opens and closes the drawers of our soul, in which we keep all our feelings. There are drawers for our innermost secrets, but also places where we hide away our happiness, anger, joy, jealousy and sorrows. The soul bird has the keys to these drawers, and can open them when we ask. But sometimes the soul bird seems to disobey our wishes, and tolerance turns to fear, or calm turns to anger. Perhaps we don't listen to our soul bird often enough. Indeed, some of us only hear it once in a lifetime. We should try, maybe late at night, or at another time of peace and quiet, to hear the voice of the soul bird, and listen to what it is telling us. Michal Snunit's "The Soul Bird" has been translated into 25 languages and has been a bestseller around the world for ten years since its first publication. This celebration edition introduces new colour to enhance the beautiful simplicity of Na'ama Golomb's original illustrations. This gentle and poetic book has become a firm favourite with both children and adults. Showing how the consolation and encouragement we need can be found in small, everyday places, it is a lovely resource for those moments when we feel in need of spiritual refreshment. Its deceptive simplicity conceals a deeper philosophical message for us all.

I was introduced to this at a work training day ( I work in a school) and was really moved by it. I tend to be a "bottler" of my feelings until it all comes pouring out like a burst pipe. Therefore I thought it would be good if my sons could identify and express their feelings before they build up. I bought this and was amazed at the beautiful thoughts and explanations my boys came out with. Both of them loved the book and really did listen to it. Afterwards we had a lovely long cuddle and discussion about how we feel, what we can do if we feel something we don't want to, and they even told me what their individual soul bird looks like which was really interesting and an insight into how they see themselves. They really seemed to like the bird, and it opened up such a lot of other questions such as "does our dog have a soul bird?" Do all living things? Ect they also opened up about what makes them feel sad, happy ect and they even opened up about bad thoughts because the soul bird allowed them to distance themselves from blame ie it wasn't me it was the soul bird ect, allowing me to really understand them.

Fantastic book we all loved it and the peace it creates at bedtime.im going to buy two more copies to allow them to colour the pictures in to look like their own soul birds as they imagine them! X

5.0 out of 5 stars Sweet Story 3 May 2013

I bought this book with my 10yr old in mind - he'd been having a few problems with friends at school and I wanted to explain why it's important to stay true to yourself, but in a gentle way. He really liked it, and it did make sense to him. The surprise was how much my 6yr old loves this story - it's become one of his favourite bedtime stories.

It's beautifully written, with simple stylistic illustrations. Even if you don't believe in the soul, this is a lovely way to explain different feelings.

This is a lovely book for opening discussions about feelings with children. It creates an image to de-personalised the cause of the feelings and allows you to look objectively at them. Very nicely written and illustrated.

5.0 out of 5 stars timeless book 15 April 2013

I have used this book as a meditation tool. It is wonderful to also read it to others who may be going through difficult times irrespective of age. My 4 children have been brought up with this book. It transends gender too. I have bought copies for many many people. You will not be disapointed with your purchase if you buy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Soul Bird 17 July 2012

An excellent little book but with a big helpful message that leaves a profound impact. I bought the book for friends to give to their teenager as 'food for thought' and enjoyed it so much I bought another one to keep for myself - very good to re-read every so often as a reminder.

Another friend who works in a primary school read my copy and thinks it a good idea that this book should be incorporated into every school library or become part of a lesson plan, possibly PHSE syllabus?
