Product Description

An epic tale of brothers divided, family rivalry, fortunes lost and won, set against the dramatic background of the early days of the oil industry.

Two boys are raised as brothers. Alan is the son of the lord of the manor, with all the privileges which come with that birthright. The other, Tom, is the son of the gardener. Together, they learn to argue, fight and bond in friendship.

Social difference divides their paths as adults but nothing can break their bond until a tragic misunderstanding occurs in the trenches of World War I. Now instead of the closest of friends they will be the bitterest of rivals in a burgeoning industry: oil.

From the early days of drilling in Persia, to wildcatting in Texas, to the corridors of Whitehall and Washington, this is the story of two remarkable men and the very different women who loved them.

A Fascinating Read 29 Aug 2004
Format:Paperback
I've only recently discovered the talented Harry Bingham and had thoroughly enjoyed his first two books, The Money Makers and Sweet Talking Money. I therefore assumed this one would be in the same vein. IT'S BETTER!

In The Sons of Adam, Harry Bingham has moved on to the next level of writing, producing a marvellous book which combines historical accuracy with two deeply passionate love stories, and the extraordinary relationship of three brothers.

Richly entertaining, while also heartrendingly sad in parts, you experience everything from the futility of war to the equal futility of greed.

I cannot recommend this book highly enough. Harry Bingham is not just the new Jeffrey Archer, he's unique and will stand in his own right.

This is my favourite Harry Bingham to date, and that's saying something. No matter if you have read none of the others, this will convert you instantly. Its a truly great epic story, about two brothers "set across three continents and three world wars" it is enormous in its ambitions and achieves all of them.

A story about the oil industry and the history of the 20th century on the one hand, but a moving drama about two young men their and romances on the other. I picked this book up and 36 hours later I put it down, red eyed, short of sleep and hungry. For each one of those hours I lived this book and all of its twists and turns and the way that it draws you in completely. There's a fantastic and surprising ending and throughout the writing is completely gripping. I cannot recommend it highly enough. If you want really classy, classic beach reading in the style of Jeffrey Archer/Kane and Abel but finally more mature, then this is THE BOOK for the summer.

Absorbing, tragic, adventurous, gripping. What more can you want?

I hope that the author goes on to be a huge success because then there will be plenty more books for years to come.

A True Masterpiece 6 May 2011
By BDMist
Format:Paperback
This is the first book I have read by Harry Bingham and it certainly wont be the last. I have a thirst for his amazing talent as a writer and I have already purchased his other books to read at my leisure.

As a fan of children's books, fantasy and fiction, this isn't the type of book I would normally read but after meeting the author I decided to give it a try. What a fantastic decision. This is my most favourite adult book I have ever read and I cannot praise the author enough. His writing is truly spectacular and the first chapter is wonderfully written. As much as I enjoyed the whole book the first chapter is beautifully plotted and I found myself reading it several times before carrying on with the rest of the book. It really is that fantastic.

Harry Bingham manages to keep the pace from start to finish creating a sense of place wherever his characters find themselves, and also creates characters with such feeling and emotion you can really empathise with their situation. My grandfather was in WW II and I feel very passionately about any war books and do worry that they will not fully express the ordeal that our soldiers went through. In the Sons of Adam this is not the case. Harry has clearly researched his history thoroughly and you would almost believe that he was there on the front line taking notes throughout the war. He describes the bond between brothers and how easily this can be broken. We find out what it is like to have everything and nothing, to be an outcast and a well respected soldier, and what it is like to feel as though we have nothing left to lose. This epic novel takes you across the continent, through two world wars, takes you into the world of the oil industry (which is surprisingly interesting!), throws in a few love stories on the way, then does a full circle back to where we started. It is hard to believe that the characters could both change completely yet also remain exactly the same.

It is incredibly hard to write concisely whilst creating atmosphere, building story and achieving a good plot line, but Harry achieves this effortlessly. I really couldn't put this book down. This is a beautifully written piece of literature and I would highly recommend this to anyone. If this isn't your type of book - I would recommend it anyway. It will leave you wanting more and you really wont be disappointed.
