5.0 out of 5 stars riches and treasure! 8 Mar 2008
By Mr. Ian A. Macfarlane TOP 100 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD
This CD, the first in a series of 4 covering something like 120 of Burns's songs, is quite wonderful. It is the result of a collaboration between the outstanding Scots folk singer Jean Redpath and an American composer and arranger, Serge Hovey, who researched the songs and wrote the arrangements. The recordings came out on LP quite some time ago - I had one - and were transferred to CD in the 1990s. Redpath sings with wonderful understanding and commitment. And what songs! A great glory of this series is the number of absolutely wonderful but little-known songs that have been recorded. I have a particular favourite, 'Country Lassie', whose gloriously poignant tune (which is not Scots, in fact, though most of the tunes here are) frames a heartfelt study of whether it is best to marry for love, with possible material disaster ensuing, or for money, ensuring an emotionally arid future - not such a difficult question nowadays, but a very real one in the time of Burns's young working people (as it was for Burns himself, regarded with soem mistrust by the Armour family) There is not a weak song on the CD, or one that is weakly performed, and I cannot give it a strong enough recommendation

3.0 out of 5 stars Lovely songs BUT 11 Aug 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Jean Redpath has a beautiful melodious voice, but the American arrangements are strident and overpowering. Also, the glossary of Scottish words is not always correct and not properly researched. "Gate" is one which comes to mind, being a road or track in the North West of Britain, from the Norse "Gata".. Can't remember the context now, but the translation was incorrect.

5.0 out of 5 stars Your search for good Burns songs has ended 28 Jan 2000
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Jean Redpath sings the "inimitable songs of Burns" as if Rabbie himself is hovering over her shoulder. You're not likely to find too many singers more suited to her material than Redpath. Also, I needs must mention the first-rate musical accompaniments by Serge Hovey. All in all, the seven volume Redpath-Burns series is indispensible for lovers of song everywhere. Way to go, folks.

I love this voice, love these songs. So mellow, so perfect, so otherworldly, really, and yet of the earth. Perfect.
4.0 out of 5 stars Poor mixing 3 April 2014

Most of this recording is great. However, Nine Inches to please a lady has the accompaniment so loud that the words are obscured. Is this a form of censorship?
