5.0 out of 5 stars An Overdue Overview. 7 Jun 2009
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Richard Cundill and Mark Bradley have created a great account of one of England's finest songwriters.
The thread that weaves through this book is Martin's love for music and his fans love for him. Documenting Martin's stuggle with the music industry fat cats and with the demon drink whilst giving a fair critique of his recorded work.
As a fan i found this book compelling and a bit sad as i'm reminded of how little coverage his finest work recieved by the music press.
On the upside we are reminded Martin got by with the reputation for fine live performances and a loyal e group.
The resounding message of this book is you can't underestimate the power of the people and the power of music.
The book also includes a discography which i found handy to put my collection in chronilogical order as Martin seemed to put out a cd every other month for a while. I've just found out that three more are on their way. Thank you gents for a valued account of a national treasure.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting! 7 Jan 2010
Format:Paperback
A huge fan of the great man for many years and would loved to have found out more about Martin the person as well as Martin the musician. Found the book a bit too technical in places, wanted to know more about the people. Was good to learn reasons behind some of the songs but you do get a lot of that at gigs anyway.
Slightly disappointed, but great to have any book written about such an under-rated musician. Fans will want to read it no matter what!

Personally I found this to be more of a Daintees biography than Martin Stephenson. It covers a lot of the struggle with record labels, which is interesting to read but there is an awful lot of what gigs were played, where and who the members of the Daintees were at the time.
If you want a detailed biography of the man himself this is not the book for it,( you can learn more by going to one of his gigs) but perhaps some things are best left to the readers imagination.
