Product Description

Product Description

Of all the lines which fell under the Beeching Axe, the Somerset and Dorset, which rolls through some of the most beautiful countryside in Britain, was perhaps the best loved. The unique variety of rolling stock and scenery was recorded in its heyday by the great railway photographers of the age: men like Ivo Peters, Derek Cross and Dick Riley. Nearly three decades after the line's closure, another photographer returned to the haunts of his predecessors to document what remained of this once-proud railway. Calculating the precise location from which the originals were taken, Mac Hawkins has recreated the shots: wading through knee-deep water, hiring fork lift trucks and even suspending himsef from a mobile crane to simulate the view from a long-demolished signal gantry. The resulting 160 pairs of "then and now" photographs form a record of the passage of time, and should be appreciated by local historians and lovers of the English countryside alike. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

This is one of the best books on the S&D, see what has happened to this wonderful but sadly missed line. Mac Hawkins has done a superb job researching this book with photographs and maps. Mac has re-created the images of such photographers as Ivo Peters from exactly the same view points. Out of all the many books on the S&D this is one of my favourites.

If you ever thought you were born 50 years to late - this is the best example of it. Mac Hawkins has produced a brilliant book that takes you through the whole line with some interesting analogies and comparisons to Ivo Peters original photos. It's a book signifcantly caught in the past with all the steam, the dirt, and yet the romance that accompanies it. For any schoolboy who lives close to the line and always wanted to see Steam trains going through a long defunct line - this is the book to clearly illustrate it. It's a classic that you can open, time after time and somewhere you'll always read something that you missed a previous time.

anyone who is interested in railways in the U.K would I am sure be be very impressed with this book, that shows the dismantlement of a very hardworking & scenic railway, which had survived may econmical hardships, & could see its salvation in the introduction of the 9Fs & other standard class locomotives, but politically will & mismanagement by western region of BR were the final factors leading to its demise. What a fantastic heritage railway it would be today,it had everything to make a glorious railway journey. Read the book & with a little imagination from the photographs of the stations, the trains, the countryside, and the very well kept railway you are there on the Pines Express.Somerset and Dorset: Then and Now
