Reviews

A fairy story and a melodrama set to Stravinsky's music with some excellent ballet. The score is played by The Melos Ensemble and conducted by Derek Hudson.

Quirky, but it works - captures the spirit of the composition very well - lovely hammy acting brings the story to life

Svetlana Beriosova dances beautifully, Robert Helpmann is excellent in a number of guises & Brian Phelan is fine as the soldier. I liked the use of Chiswick House for some of the scenes.

I remember when this first came out I wasn't too enamoured of it. However, I thought I'd buy a copy and re-evaluate. It is even worse then I thought.

Helpmann is appallingly OTT, as he could be, and the general format is all wrong. It should have been done on stage. The wonderous Beriosova is woefully used, to the point that a choreographer isn't even credited. Whoever it was must have been so ashamed that they refused to have their name used. Beriosova was one of the glories of the Royal Ballet, and to see her so misused is bordering on scandalous. Don't touch it.
