Book Description

16 Jan 2013
The practices are designed to inspire and motivate the players in real game situations that give them freedom of choice and movement both in and out of possession. The basic techniques of passing, dribbling, shooting, tackling and heading will all be used but with use to solve a match problem rather than constant repetition. The sessions have goals and objectives for both the attacking and defending players in order to aid the tempo, competition and enjoyment of the practice.

The drills in this book, like those in all of Michael Beale's books, are well laid out and easy to understand. I feel they are a bit complex for under-7 & 8 age groups, or for coaches that have not yet obtained their level 1 badge, but I recommend this book to any coach of level 1 or higher, who is coaching players of under-9 or older.

A great partner to this book which I also recommend is Michael Beale's "Soccer Academy: 100 Defending Practices and Small Sided Games"

Want to know a book to avoid ? - "101 Great Youth Soccer Drills: Skills and Drills for Better Fundamental Play" by Robert Koger. The drills are really confusing, even to more experienced coaches than myself that I've shown them to.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book with modern training methods 10 Dec 2010

This is a superbly written and laid out book from a coach for whom I have the greatest of respect. Michael Beale has backed up his Defending book with a better book for Finishing and overloads. I use this book with all my sessions, from under 7s to under 15s and they work very very well.

This is a great book if you are looking for more modern drills, rather than stand in a line an shoot. The games give you a good balance and are designed to coach in a match situation style. The author knows his stuff and I would recommend this highly!

If you are looking for coaching books then Michael Beale and Wayne Harrison are 2 guys who can do no wrong.

There are good progressive games, and coaching points for each game. Kids will love it and they make your sessions more enjoyable

5.0 out of 5 stars Real World Drills 28 Aug 2013

There is no finer book for a quick reference when you need a specific training drill. We have all been caught as a coach with more or less players to train than we thought, and this book gives you a ready reckoner and quick fire aid to finding the perfect drill. I have used almost all of these drills and I have modified, joined and built up several into full blown training sessions. I have even used some of these principles for my National Coaching license course. All-in-all, a great book and one to stuff in your training bag. You will use it!

I have used some of these drills with high school as well as club soccer athletes. The book is well organized and sets out clearly what the purpose of the drill(s) is designed to do.

I would recommend this book if you are looking to get many players involved in drills. It isn't really for individual or small groups, these are team drills and I found many of them helpfull to incorporate into my practices.
