Product Description

Product Description

For too long, defending practice has been presented by coaches and received by players as a necessary evil, filled with unimaginative drills that provide players with little or no reward for getting it right. This book contains 100 exercises and small sided games designed to inspire players to become better defenders both tactically and technically in a fun and competitive training environment.
The games are set up to re-create the unpredictability of actual match play, with no long queues or endless repetitions. Because of this, players are more involved in the practice and are thus learning "how to play the game" and developing the skills to deal with the ever-evolving situations on the pitch.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not Bad at All ! 5 Nov 2009
Format:Paperback
Been coaching for around seven years and at present coaching under 14's.
I found this book to have a lot of good exercises which the lads seem to enjoy, fairly easy to understand the diagrams and descriptions which is not always the case in a lot of coaching books.
Its cetainly helped my lot and especially in the communication side of things
as most youngish teams, they were all too quiet on the pitch.
Worth adding to your coaching library.

5.0 out of 5 stars Defending practice in an interesting way! 22 Jan 2010
By GT
Format:Paperback
Not a fan of most coaching books as find a lot of them not an easy read. This book breaks the mould for me. Excellent diagrams, easy to understand, well written text explaining the practices/ games and you can see Michael has given plenty of thought into putting this book together. A nice touch is most of the practices/ games have some extra text with Michaels thoughts on what he was trying to achieve.
There are plenty of well thought out and interesting practices/ small sided games to use covering all aspects of defending, and in doing so making them fun to use for my team. I'm not a fan of having my players standing around for a long time or having no end 'goal' to succed in learning good defending and this book delivers in this. Highly recomended.

The drills in this book, like those in all of Michael Beale's books, are well laid out and easy to understand. I feel they are a bit complex for under-7 & 8 age groups, or for coaches that have not yet obtained their level 1 badge, but I recommend this book to any coach of level 1 or higher, who is coaching players of under-9 or older.

A great partner to this book which I also recommend is Michael Beale's "The Soccer Academy: 140 Overload Games and Finishing Practices".

Want to know a book to avoid ? - "101 Great Youth Soccer Drills: Skills and Drills for Better Fundamental Play" by Robert Koger. The drills are really confusing, even to more experienced coaches than myself that I've shown them to.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for experienced coaches 22 July 2011

Michael Beale, in my opinion, is a genius when it comes to producing game drills. I already have his Attacking book (which is similar in size and design to this one) and this is another excellent book.

This book actualy takes match type situations and gives you a large number of excellent drills/practices that your team will guranteed enjoy!!

There is no more queuing in lines to tackle etc and this will improve your training sessions. I would recommend to all coaches who have at least a year or more experience.

This book is relevant to level 2 coaches I feel, as its a bit advanced and you will need to have a good understanding on how to run and plan a session.

I would recommend buying the attacking/finishing book which compliments this.
