I bought this as part of a Raymond Briggs, Christmassy trio for my three little boys (with "Father Christmas" and "The Bear"). We have an old and gorgeous VHS "The Snowman", which we've watched often on cold Autumn/Winter/Spring days, so the boys (ages 3 and a half, 2 and 2) know the story and scenes very well.

I am so disappointed with this Storybook. I was fooled by its caption "The original pictures, with words by Raymond Briggs", assuming this meant it was the original storybook. It is a few scenes from the story, omitting some of the most enjoyable moments. Gone are all the playful scenes between James (the boy) and the snowman in his parents' house (no encounter with the cat and the Christmas Tree, no dancing on roller skates amongst the toy train, no watching the TV and taking respite from its glare in the kitchen); gone is the motorbike! No dashing through the woods encountering rabbits, foxes, the horse! No hot, sore legs which lead the snowman to the freezer where he finds a bag of frozen fish (?), the label shows some woods.. ah.. he thinks of home.. he wanders outside with longing... and he takes off with the boy towards a snowy cold land.

There is none of this. Boy makes snowman. Snowman comes alive. Snowman dresses in father's trousers. Boy and snowman run outside and fly up into the air, across a building (is it Brighton Pier?) and back down into the garden! The entire sequence that was accompanied by the classic song "Walking in the Air" is omitted. So, no flight over water, no whale tail splash, no drunken merrymaker hardly believing his eyes at what he sees in the sky, no little girl at the window blinking (has she seen Father Christmas?).

I bought this book to go with the DVD of this famous, much enjoyed story. My 2 1/2 year old grandson absolutely loved the story and was very excited by it as it wasn't long since he had built his own snowman with his Daddy. Unfortunately he was so upset by the ending of the story that we have had to put it away until he is older and can cope with the little boy's devastation at the loss of his wonderful snowman friend. I and his family were surprised just how badly it affected him - I am sure in years to come when he is older it will be possible to calmly explain the ending to him.

I still think it is a magical story but do think one should consider carefully what age it is suitable for and whether a young child would be sensitive to this very sad ending.

the book arrived in excellent condition. It misses a few points from the actual video but still good for children to read

Very good for a school age child. Toddlers and very young children would enjoy listening to Mum & Dad read this, while older children would find it an easy read. Can be linked to the film which is nice.
