The text of the story is a bit twee and bland- "How lovely it was! Tnere were flowers of every kind... Gerda jumped for joy" but no matter. Errol Le Cain's ills are wonderful, from the roundel on the preface page where the houses are a little rounded too, to the full page snow scene clearly taken from Brueghel's "Hunters in the Snow" and on to Gerda and the old woman set in a paradisical garden with Buckingham Palace sentry looking on.
Nor do the ills overwhelm the text, as in some bravura rendering of folk tales by other illustrators. I think this is because the publishers have wisely arranged for a wide blank margin to be maintained.

This is a beautiful work with superb illustrations which are detailed and lavish, yet convey the darker elements of the story. This classic tale deserves to be revisited in this delightful edition.

I think the story was very beautiful and caring. It was a fariy tale about the devil's mirror, a Snow Queen and a little girl and boy. The girl was called Gerda and the boy was called Kay. In the story Kay is taken away by the Snow Queen and Gerda wants to find him.
A very interesting part of the story was when Kay was playing with hard, shiny blocks of ice. They reminded me of the ice in Kay's heart and the splinter of the devil's mirror in his eye and heart, which sent him out of his mind, made him see only ugly things and made him forget all his friends.
You should read this book if you like caring for people, because Gerda goes to the ends of the world for Kay, her missing friend.

Not the same book; not the same illustrator. I don't think it's right that people should do this - if I order a book under a picture of it, I want the book to be that book. Read more
