Her mother (Juliet Stevenson) eventually takes pity on the boy, and brings him into the house (after Gerda has thrown down a blanket to him to fend off the cold). Soon, the two are close friends, but a sudden appearance by the Snow Queen injures Kay. He's hit in the eye with a icicle, which we later learn is really a shard of glass from the evil Looking Glass (that shows the evil inside men). Kay becomes ugly in spirit, and eventually goes off willingly with the evil Snow Queen. Gerda, heartsick that her friend Kay has vanished, goes on a magical trek to find Kay, aided by a raven (voice of Patrick Stewart), and other friends along the way. This adaptation of the Snow Queen story was recently shown on CBBC, and was one of the most magical programmes that I have seen in a long time. The action was shot in sepia like colours, with the movement of the characters having an 'old movie' feel to them. These were superimposed in places onto animated or picture backgrounds. I'm not exactly sure of the technical details of how this was put together, but it gave the whole thing an arty, but otherworldly feel.
The story was told with very little actual dialogue - it was mostly actions with odd sentences, interspersed with sung parts. This may sound as though it could be dull, but both myself and my three year old son were captivated by it. I am now buying a copy as I can't stand having the CBBC logo twinkling in the corner of the screen every 2 seconds on the copy I recorded!
This whole thing made quite a refreshing change from the brightly coloured, action packed childrens stories normally shown. It worked very well with the story, which itself is quite a stark tale.

I bought this DVD as a "christmas theme Video" for my 4 years old daughter who loves the Snow Queen story. She absolutely adore this DVD and we're watching it over and over again. The fact that the story is explained mainly by pictures and music then with dialogue add to the charm. The soundtrack is fantastic. Brilliant movie, fantastic pictures. The lenght of the DVD it's on the "long" side but I can easely leave it in pause and the kids can't wait to watch the "second part" the day after..Def. a MUST HAVE.

It is a magical heart warming film of the Hans Christian story, with emotional uplifting music and songs written by composer Paul K Joyce, and featuring soprano by the lead actress in the film, Sydney White. A soundtrack album is also available.

Not bad.
Did not quite take to the way the film was made initially. It seemed a bit like old 80s TV.

The Snow Queen
The story content was very good and I really enjoyed it although it was spoiled by a bad copy of the DVD- Young children would enjoy this film.
