Book Description

A new edition of a beautiful, poignant classic with stunning illustrations from acclaimed illustrator Angela Barrett.

Product Description

Philip Rhayader lives alone in an abandoned lighthouse on the desolate Great Marsh of Essex. One afternoon, a hauntingly beautiful child, Fritha, visits Rhayader, bringing with her an injured snow goose. At first Fritha is scared of Rhayader, with his sinister hump and crooked hand, but he is gentle and kind and Fritha begins to visit regularly. When the snow goose departs for home, Rhayader is left alone again.

The following winter, the snow goose and Fritha return to the lighthouse. Time passes and one year Fritha is frightened to discover her feelings for Rhayader. But this is 1940 and Rhayader is setting sail for Dunkirk to help the soldiers trapped on the beaches. Fritha never sees Rhayader again. But the story of the saviour with the snow goose passes from soldier to soldier and into legend . . .

A Neglected Classic? 18 Jun 2010
This is a genuine classic which has inspired much creativity among musicians, writers, teachers, artists and others over decades. However, it seems to have been neglected by many others.

I can offer this particular publication my highest recommendation for readers of all age groups. The illustrations are absolutely superb and the book offers a unique style of short story writing which is so moving that simply thinking about it as I type this makes my eyes water.

It can be read and re-read, it will never cease to provide enjoyment - a true classic!

The Snow Goose 1 Dec 2009
This book is a delight. A beautifully written and illustrated short story that will stay with me to be read again many times in years to come. There are very few books that I have fallen in love with but this is at the top of the list. Buy it and read it to your children but do not lend it to anyone as you are unlikely to see it again.

Haunting and poignant 31 Dec 2010
By hiljean TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Probably Gallico's most well-known work, this is a poignant tale of an ugly man with inner beauty who loves a pretty and shy young girl who brings him the injured snow goose of the title. The snow goose haunts the novel and inspired William Fiennes' wonderful book, The Snow Geese.

To create this memorable story in only 55 pages is quite an achievement. My one quibble is that, as an American, his attempts at reproducing working-class Cockney speech are pretty wide of the mark.

This book was chosen for our reading group as a short Christmas read and of the nine members, seven loved it and only two did not enjoy it. The harshest criticism was that it was "trite and sentimental". At the other extreme, one member immediately added it to her Amazon wishlist and was disappointed not to get it for Christmas (we support our local library by ordering our books through them).

The Snow Goose
A book bought for my wife as a present as it was a favourite book of hers from many years ago. A lovely, although poignant story and a classic greatly enjoyed.
