10 of 12 people found the following review helpful By Paul Millington on 7 Sept. 2009
Format: Audio CD
The earliest rock record I ever owned and the first band I saw perform. I'm still in love with this album 35 years on. At the time it helped me make the connection between classical and rock music. Having had the vinyl, and the remaster, and the 'Live Record' version, it was inevitable that I would succumb to making this purchase. A piece of music of which every note is very familiar to me, makes it a difficult one to review objectively. That said, I would recommend the deluxe version. Once again its nicely packaged and contains a good booklet describing the 'making of'. The album itself sounds excellent, but it always did. The extras are a bit hit & miss but always interesting, particularly hearing the sight and sound session. Latimer and Bardens were completely together on the writing of this one. A superb concept that raises the spirits and touches the soul. If you enjoy progressive music of the period then it is likely that this one would be included amongst most peoples top 10 all time albums. If you like more melodic & symphonic prog without vocals then this is the one for you - you will not be disappointed. (Further essential Camel music would be 'Moonmadness', 'Nod and a wink' and 'Rajaz')

The first disc has the original remastered album which sounds excellent plus some interesting extras (including two live tracks). The second disc is an excellent bonus of The Snow Goose recorded live for the BBC in 1975 plus a piece from BBC's Old Grey Whistle Test, also in 1975. The set also includes a nice 16 page booklet with interesting text and a collection of photo's.

In my opinion, well worth the price of the upgrade if you only have the original Decca CD.

Format: Audio CD
On the surface, an instrumental concept album based on Paul Gallico's sentimental children's book and performed by a band named after a lumpen dromedary that spits does not appear an inspiring prospect. Certainly, horrified at having his allegory on the regenerative power of friendship and love set against a backdrop of the horror of war subjected to the strummed interpretations of long-haired layabouts, Gallico attempted to have this stifled in its nest back in 1975. He need not have worried himself so. "The Snow Goose" is a serious labour of love, Camel shaping the book's narrative into a gentle and appropriately pastoral homage to Gallico's war-time novella in an enjoyable if now dated foray in melodic keyboard (Pete Bardens) and guitar-dominated progressive rock (with deft touches of flute here and there) from Andy Latimer. Livelier little numbers mostly referencing characterisation and plot action are interspersed with simple yet effective scene-setting with memorably plangent tunes, sympathetically produced by David (Caravan, Genesis) Hitchcock. Professionals both in and out of the studio, Camel were popular live and their spirited performances of this atypical oeuvre are celebrated in a pukkah package from Universal by way of plentiful bonus tracks culled from BBC Radio concerts, TV's The Old Grey Whistle Test and the usual smattering of single edits. "The Snow Goose" placed at an admirable 22 in the album charts in 1975 but didn't fly off the racks smartly enough to justify further experimentation of this kind, and Camel brought back vocals and a broader rock sound to the following year's career highpoint "Moonmadness". It really does not matter a jot whether you have read the book, "The Snow Goose" is a sweetly-memorable evoker both of Gallico's weepie and a peculiarly British music that is now gone.

Quite simply one of my all time favorite albums. A magnificent blending of rock and classical. Never mind the comparisons of if you like Pink Floyd, or Genesis, or whatever you'll like this, although you will. It's more a case of if you like music you'll like this.
If the album has a fault it's only that when it's over you'll wish it wasn't.

The original CD was already wonderful, the remastered version with bonus and excellent and this version "deluxe" is speechless. A banda consistent in his prime, one of the best works of the band and progressive rock. People who like this style, does not dispute this fact. It's an album with songs played very well worked and well balanced. There is not one bad song or reasonable. The whole album is good. The bonuses are also included in this good quality. Disc 2 is a live version of the album which also shows the excellent performance of the band on stage. Excellent! Note 9.5.
