Once in a blue moon, one gets a glimpse of what's truly important in life--and it's not always what one might expect. In the hidden land of the Smurfs, the perpetually happy blue creatures are preparing for the Blue Moon festival. They have no clue that the evil wizard Gargamel (Hank Azaria) is about to follow one of them into their secret world in an attempt to capture their happy essence--a substance guaranteed to render his magic all-powerful. In a striking parallel to Enchanted, a vortex suddenly opens up and sucks Papa, Grouchy, Smurfette, Brainy, Gutsy, and Clumsy Smurf into the middle of New York City, with Gargamel following close behind. Shocked expectant parents Patrick and Grace Winslow (Neil Patrick Harris and Jayma Mays) end up with an apartment full of the little blue beings. They eventually befriend the Smurfs and agree to help them outsmart Gargamel and find their way back home. What ensues is a danger-filled, comical adventure that takes the Smurfs from Central Park to Patrick's place of employment and even FAO Schwarz. Just when it looks like their plan to return home will fail, and that they've destroyed Patrick's career in the process, things really heat up and everyone learns a lesson about what's really important in life and about believing in oneself. The film does a good job melding live action and animation, and there's plenty of humour involved for both kids and adults. Most kids will laugh their way through the film, but there are some situations of peril that the very youngest or easily frightened might find rather intense. Harris and Mays do a good job interacting with their new blue friends, but it's too bad these talented actors weren't given a bit more depth of character to work with. Azaria is quite an effective villain and Frank Welker's cat Azrael is hysterical. Other notable voice talent includes Jonathan Winters as Papa Smurf, Alan Cumming as Gutsy, Katy Perry as Smurfette, Fred Armisen as Brainy, George Lopez as Grouchy and Anton Yelchin as Clumsy. The Smurfs is funny enough family entertainment, but given its star-studded cast, it had the potential to be even better. (Ages 7 and older) --Tami Horiuchi

This is another retro come back for the big screen we have had the chipmunks now its them little blue guys with the catchy theme tune!! Theres only so much you can do with smurfs so they have expanded the story so they find a portal to earth, all a bit far fetched and ridiculously over the top but its for children and they love it so it does not matter, this is a bit cheesy in the way of acting from the human stars but the smurfs are pretty well computer generated from their exact likenesses from their early cartoon show and comic strips. A fun for young children film but not something you want to see over again!!

Surprisingly, when my five year old daughter persuaded me to get this movie, I didn't find it as awful as I had anticipated. Having said that, it is tremendously cheesy - particularly the scenes focusing on the married couple, Grace and Patrick, who aid the blue poppets in their quest to defeat evil wizard Gargamel (the ever-brilliant Hank Azaria). Heavy-handed morals about the importance of family life over career and the beauty of new life are always going to be present in this kind of family fare, however these did become hard to stomach after a while and the 105 minutes running time is certainly not too short. There are enough pratfalls, however, to keep the kids entertained, meaning that this DVD is worth purchasing for those wet autumn saturdays when you need some respite from the little darlings.

My 10 years old daughter liked this movie a lot and we certainly had fun talking "smurf" at home for the next couple of days. She also asked me for the Smurf books she didn't know at all and started to read them passionately. As for me, I spend a nice moment at the cinema and certainly all the kids had great time. The movie is nice, there is no real violence, Gargamel is very funny and his cat provides even more jokes. The cultural shock between the Smurfs and New York is well treated and the friendship between the Smurfs and a couple of New Yorkers (and their dog) is a nice and very touching story. Still, this is not a masterpiece, like some other kids movies in the recent years ("Toy Story 3" being may be the best example) - but as far as kids are concerned, this is a guaranteed success! In fact I think I wouldn't say no to a sequel.

The new Smurfs film - excellent!
Both the kids and adults really enjoyed this film! I would highly recommend buying it! Takes me back to my childhood!

Smurfs are back
Smurfs are back and are as funny as ever! My 6 year old loved this birthday gift. The delivery was quick. Would recommend to any child for a good comedy.
