Product Description

When the evil wizard Gargamel chases the tiny blue Smurfs out of their village, they tumble from their magical world and into ours -- in fact, smack dab in the middle of Central Park. Just three apples high and stuck in the Big Apple, the Smurfs must find a way to get back to their village before Gargamel tracks them down.

From Amazon.co.uk

Once in a blue moon, one gets a glimpse of what's truly important in life--and it's not always what one might expect. In the hidden land of the Smurfs, the perpetually happy blue creatures are preparing for the Blue Moon festival. They have no clue that the evil wizard Gargamel (Hank Azaria) is about to follow one of them into their secret world in an attempt to capture their happy essence--a substance guaranteed to render his magic all-powerful. In a striking parallel to Enchanted, a vortex suddenly opens up and sucks Papa, Grouchy, Smurfette, Brainy, Gutsy, and Clumsy Smurf into the middle of New York City, with Gargamel following close behind. Shocked expectant parents Patrick and Grace Winslow (Neil Patrick Harris and Jayma Mays) end up with an apartment full of the little blue beings. They eventually befriend the Smurfs and agree to help them outsmart Gargamel and find their way back home. What ensues is a danger-filled, comical adventure that takes the Smurfs from Central Park to Patrick's place of employment and even FAO Schwarz. Just when it looks like their plan to return home will fail, and that they've destroyed Patrick's career in the process, things really heat up and everyone learns a lesson about what's really important in life and about believing in oneself. The film does a good job melding live action and animation, and there's plenty of humour involved for both kids and adults. Most kids will laugh their way through the film, but there are some situations of peril that the very youngest or easily frightened might find rather intense. Harris and Mays do a good job interacting with their new blue friends, but it's too bad these talented actors weren't given a bit more depth of character to work with. Azaria is quite an effective villain and Frank Welker's cat Azrael is hysterical. Other notable voice talent includes Jonathan Winters as Papa Smurf, Alan Cumming as Gutsy, Katy Perry as Smurfette, Fred Armisen as Brainy, George Lopez as Grouchy and Anton Yelchin as Clumsy. The Smurfs is funny enough family entertainment, but given its star-studded cast, it had the potential to be even better. (Ages 7 and older) --Tami Horiuchi

I was looking forward to this as I am a fan of Hank Azaria (The Simpsons etc.) and Neil Patrick Harris (How I Met Your Mother) but found this a bit dull and the 3D effects were poor when this type of movie lends itself to that format. It wasn't rubbisk or Brilliant, just OK and watchable

This is another retro come back for the big screen we have had the chipmunks now its them little blue guys with the catchy theme tune!! Theres only so much you can do with smurfs so they have expanded the story so they find a portal to earth, all a bit far fetched and ridiculously over the top but its for children and they love it so it does not matter, this is a bit cheesy in the way of acting from the human stars but the smurfs are pretty well computer generated from their exact likenesses from their early cartoon show and comic strips. A fun for young children film but not something you want to see over again!!

Ok, so 'The Smurfs' film completely passed me by, depite owning their soundtrack when I was younger. I just thought I'd probably grown out of it. Anyway, the 'little people' in our family said how good it was and convinced me to try it.

The basic storyline involves the smurfs (Papa, Smurfette, Clumsy, Clever, Grouchy and Gutsy) getting stuck in New York. They have to try and get back, which they can only do on a blue moon, while trying to outwit their enemy, Gargamel, who is after their smurf 'essence'. They enlist the help of Patrick and his pregnant wife Grace to help them.

I instantly thought how cute and realistic the smurfs were. They blended seemlessly with the 'real' actors and surroundings. I'd also never seen the actors who play Patrick and Grace in anything before, but I thought they did a fabulous job. Gargamel was also a great villan.

The film has some great messages, especially the emphasis on family. Why would you want to live in a bigger house as that would mean you were further apart?

It lost a star as, while I don't have children, I think some of this might be quite frightening for them. The ending made me cry! I also found some of the singing an irritation after a while.

All in all, a good film which I enjoyed. I defy you not to be singing 'la, la, la a happy song' after you've seen it.

This live-action and CGI family comedy adventure is about a group of tiny little blue people the Smurfs who were chased out of their village by an evil wizard named Gargamel (Hank Azaria) and his cat Azrael through a magic portal where they are stranded in New York City and need some help from a human couple in the form of Patrick Winslow (Neil Patrick Harris) and wife Grace Winslow (Jayma Mays) to get them back home. While this film lacks soul and originality, it has at least have enough heart that makes it worth a watch, it has some funny moments and it also benefits from a fine cast of live-action and voice-over stars including US pop star Katy Perry on her feature film debut as the voice of Smurfette and a fine performance from Hank Azaria as Gargamel. This is after all just a basic kids film with nothing spectacularly ground-breaking to show for it but it could have been worse and it could have been better, but for those who have found it enjoyable enough won't probably say 'no' to a sequel and this film is not as bad as some people would think and that does not say much.

My 10 years old daughter liked this movie a lot and we could spend a nice cinema moment together - we also certainly had fun talking "smurf" at home for the next couple of days. She also asked me for the Smurf comic books she didn't know at all and started to read them passionately.

As far as I could see, all the kids in the cinema had a great time and giggled a lot. The movie is nice, there is no real violence or any kind of bad language. Gargamel is very funny and his character is very faithful to the one from comic books. His cat Azrael on another hand is in this film much smarter and his relations with his "master" provides some of the best jokes.

The cultural shock between the Smurfs and New York is well treated and the friendship between the Smurfs and a couple of New Yorkers (and their dog) is a nice and very touching story.

Although maybe not exactly on the same level of excellence as "Toy Story 3" or "Despicable me", this is nevertheless a very honest kid's movie and I am certain that with any child it will be a guaranteed success! I definitely wouldn't say no to a sequel. Enjoy and good smurf!

The Smurfs is a fun filled, colourful film with lots of heart. It bops along a good rate to keep young minds amused for a while and has some wonderful characters which light up the screen.

So often these types of films fail to impress due to a complete lack of understanding of the characters they are portraying and a flimsy story they are trying to tell. Whilst this isnt going to win any awards for story telling, its light and funny and full of action along the way.

The animation is of a high standard and each little smurf's personality comes to life well. A surprisingly good little film which will entertain all the family.
