Format: Paperback
This book is filled with glorious photos, and for any Smiths fan is an essential guide to the bands week by week history. It's main downside is that most of the actual information and interviews have been lifted from the same authors superior Severed Alliance book, which means a lot of going over the same ground for readers of that book. While a lot of information is covered, the diary format isnt rigourously applied, and there are a number of instances where gaps in the story are obvious (such as the bypasssing Morrissey's meeting with Sandie Shaw and the recording session for that single)and occasionally Rogan makes sweeping statements during his attempts to psycho-analyse Morrissey, and this presentaion of supposition as fact must have engraged his subject.
An essential read for committed fans, but ultimately a lesser book than the Severed Alliance.

The Smiths: The God Sent Documentary 11 Dec. 1999

Format: Paperback
I loved this book and when I say "loved", I mean LOVED! This book was my first true love affair and a very immoral one, I might add. One can almost experience The Smiths era through the portal of this book and what an era it was. Morrissey is a gorgeous genious. Johnny Marr is simply a wizard. Andy Rourke and Mike Joyce's stories move along well and add to simply marvelous group. Johnny Rogan has done his homework and even though Morrissey insists that he is insane, Mr. Rogan succeeds. I recommend this book to anyone with passion and intelligence. I mean, is there anything otherwise?

Too near the bone 14 Feb. 2001

Format: Paperback
As of this writing, "The Visual Documentary," written about legendary British band the Smiths, is tragically out of print. What a castastrophe! I loved reading about Morrissey's semi-pitiful longing for attention, Johnny Marr's guitar influences and the incessant arguments between the band's two visionaries. Author Johnny Rogan is not well-liked by lead singer Morrissey, but Rogan uses that angst to further illustrate his wonderfully poignant portrait of the band. The Smiths and their fans are well-served by this amazing paperback. Read it soon, if you can ever find it!

Read it and become a Smiths fan 16 April 1998

Format: Paperback
Written by Johnny Rogan, the same author of "Morrissey and Marr: The Severed Alliance", but even better than it, "The Smiths: The Visual Documentary" is the ultimate biography of the eighties' rock icons. From Morrissey's Irish roots to the band's world stardom, the book covers all the important, and not so important, moments of The Smiths. Fully illustrated, it features even a copy of Morrissey's family tree and a picture of his birth certificate. Very informative for beginners, essential for die-hard fans: a must.
