4.0 out of 5 stars smashing ideas 23 Nov 2011

I got this on spec for my designer son - I think that perhaps he is rather beyond some of the ideas and concepts but nonetheless it is a lovely source book and no-one is ever too advanced/clever not to need to be able to pluck a fresh thought out of thin air occasionally. Beautifully presented and appetising to dip into there is something for everyone here.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good web yearbook, with a few extras 13 Nov 2011
Format:Paperback|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
I'm a web professional, and every year I get hold of a book that trawls the internet, listing all the current cutting edge sites by design features or subject. I then use HTTrack to create a DVD of all the sites for future reference, using the book as an index (HTTrack allows you to create an offline archive of a website, and is free).

I have one such book/DVD combination for every year since 1999. None of the sites for my 1999 DVD (Well actually, back then it was a CDROM) are actually online anymore (at least not in their original form) and this gives me (a) a design resource that nobody else has and (b) an interactive resource of how the web industry is changing.

Ok, not strictly how the book (and perhaps also the web) is intended to be used, but I find it to be a very good system. Who knows, in 30 years time, when even waybackmachine is gone (and many cutting edge websites *already* no longer display correctly in WBM), my little collection may become the only remaining unbroken archive of how web design has developed!

More importantly, this book is as good as any other books I have used as my 'these are the best sites for this year' index. If all you want is a lead in to the best and inspirational web sites of 2011, then this book is a good starting point.

One slight criticsm for the book would be its use only of images that were clearly released for print by the originators at no cost. For example, in the photography section, all the images are from Flikr and other social sites, and there is not one single use of an image by any photography 'name'. Having worked in the tech book publishing industry 2000-2006, I know exactly why this is (and its the same reason why I no longer work in publishing): cost.

3.0 out of 5 stars A great ideas/inspiration sparker 16 April 2012
Format:Paperback|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
This is a nice book for any designer's shelf ... a resource to be dipped in and out of as the need for inspiration strikes or just for casual browsing at any time.

I think of this book as a mega-resource for mood-board planning! It is a collection of images, photographs and all kinds of design - from products to great websites. I am always a little unsure about books printing images of websites as I think these kinds of resources are best being web-based where they can be browsed through properly on the platform they've been designed for, but in this case, the web is just one aspect of the overall mix and so it seems to work very well.

4.0 out of 5 stars A solid book for your design book collection 6 Nov 2011
Format:Paperback|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
Firstly, the criticisms. The pages could have done with a high gloss effect rather than being of matte finish. There's something about a gloss finish for inspirational photos, it brings out the colour and just makes it 'shine' more. The only other critisicm I can level at this book is that the website examples will eventually date as trends change but with the overall quantity and quality of other areas of inspiration it's no big deal. And that's my only criticisms. The book covers a good range of types of inspiration, from colour and shape images to textures and patterns to the use of space and also, obviously, websites. Also included are photos of architecture, interior design and also random images of everyday things. It's a sizeable book, well layer out and perfect for a flip through until something catches your eye or for a good read of chapters. This is the only Smashing Magazine book I have and based on the volume and quality of relevant content, I definitely recommend this book for anyone looking to add a good design book to their library.
