A fascinating book. Quite challenging in places (it makes you think) as it is not the usual airport reading- type business book. It is more grown-up than that. These guys write and write well. So, it is longer than average but an enjoyable read.

No "10-steps-to-heaven-in-10 days-or-your-money-back" type nonsense here. Proper authors. Proper book.

Well -written, well-researched, great case studies and kept me engaged on a subject I wouldn't normally read about. The message for me was that so much is all about design and yet we so rarely apply design to our own lives and spaces. We all talk about design in our own business world but rarely apply it to our lives and environments.

Disclaimer: I was interviewed as part of the research for this book.

I've spent a lot of time over the past few years, helping others to envision a very different way of working, one which uses the power provided by technology (and the cultural change it affords) to fundamentally change both our concepts of and our approach to how we work.

In this accessible and enjoyable book, Clapperton and Vanhoutte explore new ways of working, but more importantly, have gone further than most to provide the reader with tangible ideas and action points that anyone can use to help make the transition to a world of "smarter working".

Covering a broad range of areas, from the culture of work, through to education, skills, technology and even broader concerns like acoustic design, both authors combine to provide an excellent handbook for anyone looking not just to understand the potential of a world of smarter working, but to help them start down their own journey of actually making it happen.

If you're interested in making your experience of work better (either as employer or employee), this is a fantastic place to start.

Disclaimer: Plantronics is a client of my employer

The Smarter Working Manifesto is an insightful, well-written book that certainly opened my eyes in terms of what Smarter Working is and how to implement it within the business.

For all too many companies, flexible working consists merely of allowing employees to “work from home” on a Friday. This book shows that Smarter Working is so much more than that.
The Smarter Working Manifesto covers a wide range of topics to suit everyone and also provides some really helpful case studies and resources that bring Smarter Working to life.

For me, the most helpful section discussed managing teams and changing a team’s mind-set. Just because a team member is working from home or working away from the office it doesn’t mean that they are unavailable.

What’s more, the action points for professionals and action points for managers at the end of each chapter are very helpful.

Don’t be put off by ‘manifesto’ in the title. It’s a great, easy read and will have you thinking not only about how you work but how you can help your team work smarter.

Disclaimer - I am a Plantronics employee.
I finally got around to reading The Smarter Working Manifesto on an 11 hour flight to San Francisco as I was heading to our corporate offices for some high quality face to face collaboration. I must add that while the flight was long, the book took a little over two hours and was a thoroughly entertaining read. As an employee at Plantronics for over 9 years I have witnessed the evolution first hand, so the manifesto pulls no punches on the journey we have been on as a company, both the good and the not so good. It's been a massive learning for all which is now so well documented here that if you are joining the workplace for the very first time, or faced with task of managing remote teams, or even managing your office refurbishment - this is a practical how to guide on how your future at "work" could look. It made me once again appreciate the motivation and freedom that comes with Smarter Working. Dave Marshall
