Arthur Geary is a mild-natured, middle-aged scientist living a blameless existence in the suburbs with his wife and two children. His mental health breaks down and he finds the only way to escape the sounds of "the drums" is to live on Paddington Station. During the day he wanders around the concourse, stopping for breaks at various refreshment bars and sleeping in the station hotel at night. Although his family is disturbed by his mysterious, largely unexplained absence, he feels he is in control and may improve if left quietly by himself. All is well until he is spotted by a helpful/officious neighbour. His cover is blown and his quiet routine destroyed. One of the most touching parts of the story is when his ten year old son, David, slips up to London without telling anyone and meets up with his father. Their understated and diffident relationship is immesaurably touching and the ending of the book both tragic and inevitable.
