The secret to enjoying this album is to skip the first track (UFO...), which is a bit of a turkey, and for which I've deducted a star! The rest of the disc is well up to the expected standard, featuring phenomenal musicianship (Keltner, Hiatt etcetera) and pin-sharp production. From a rootsy take on "Blue Suede Shoes" to the closing track, "That's the Way..." A brilliant album. If you have a soul, buy it!

I have everything from Boomers Story onwards. This is my favourite. Pull up some Ry and sit down and listen to one of his least heard recordings !!!

I don't know what guitar(s) Ry recorded with on this album, but for my money we are finally getting to hear the guitar sound that Ry is famous for today. The sound is fatter and more sustained - something he had totally mastered by the time "Get Rhythm" and "Bring The Family" came out.

The songs are great too. Brilliantly different version of Blue Suede Shoes (with an added third verse!) - great guitar solos :) Mama, Don't treat Your Daughter Mean is a great song in the vein of "The Very Thing That Makes You Rich". Curiously however, this track features a very throwaway guitar solo that sounds like a rudimentary afterthought, that he might have wanted to re-do. This is strange when you compare it to all the other work he has recorded on guitar!

I like UFO has landed in the ghetto. It's well sung and groovy as heck - shades of "Down In Hollywood".I would however have taken out the annoying organ break thats meant to sound like a UFO ! and added some nice electric guitar...

"Which Came first" is a superb song. Co-written by Ry and Blues great Willie Dixon, it's a cracking atmospheric blues track where I just wish the guitar playing in it was a little more adventurous.

Finally for those who think Ry can't sing - listen to "Thats the way love turned out for me" . an excellent soul ballad in the vein of Curtis Mayfield. His singing along with his singing on the bona fide Mayfield track "Gypsy Woman" is superb :)

I generally like Ry Cooder, but this is not his best album, it's decidedly mediocre.
