5.0 out of 5 stars An epic story of warfare and endurance 3 Feb 2008
By Tom
Format:Paperback
This is a reprint of a classic tale published in the 1950's about a small community in Greenland that became caught up in the treachery and secret intrigue of the early period in WW2.

The naval requirement for accurate weather reports from small manned recording stations across the North Atlantic, and the strategic implications of transmitting uncoded reports from weather stations in Greenland, precipitated a campaign of fear and guerilla type warfare in the icy wastes of Greenlands western Fjordland.

Whether the tale written by Alastair Maclean fictional " Ice station Zebra" owes its inspiration to this story is an open question. But as an example of how ordinary people can do extraordinary things when patriotism spurs their conscience, the Story of the Sledge patrol is among the very best.

4.0 out of 5 stars Winter war in Greenland 28 Mar 2010
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This is a small tale from the edge of the war zone. But the impact on the lives involved is as dramatic as any other. War comes to Greenland but the biggest danger is the place its self. Written some time ago now when the people were still around to share their story it is a very sensative telling of the conflict. The loaction is very well discribed so you can understand why war here is so differant from a muddy field in France.
