Product Description

1066 Oleander Place seems a typical tract house in the Southern California town of Tamarind Valley. What no one grasps is that this house is deadly: dark, dangerous, EVIL to the core. It consumes all who enter it, one by one--spiritually, psychologically, physically. Even to visit the place challenges fate--and promises a VERY BAD TIME for everyone there. In the tradition of Stephen King and Dean Koontz, a phantasmagoria of fear, horror, and terror!

Brutally good! 30 Aug 2011

What I thought: I'm still new to the Kindle and so far have only bought a few cheap titles, mainly horror short stories and novels. I'm still reading this one and am about halfway through. I'm really enjoying it. It's brutal and breathless, really fast-paced and enjoyable. Can't wait to get to the end! Highly recommended!

Yawn 29 April 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
zzzzzzz what a snooze fest. Mr Collings clearly thinks he is a better writer than he actually is. Do yourself a favour and avoid this book. It is not horror, it is just a family having a go at each other.

Collings Doesn't Disappoint 29 Mar 2011
By N. Montelongo - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I recently read out of his short story collection Wer Means Man and enjoyed them a great deal. I like The Slab even more. The Slab is a haunted house story taking place in a tract home in modern-day California. Haunted houses? We've seen a lot of books written about them and I have read a quite a few myself, but Michael Collings doesn't give into the cheap elements that we usually see. No cold spots or levitating objects here. Rather, each horror that we see is particular to the individual and at some points, Collings really messes with his readers.

I like to compare this to The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson and I'll borrow some thoughts from it. In Haunting, the house was built off-center to resemble the mind of its architect; the house is crazy. In The Slab, the house's foundation is cracked, corrupted and disturbed to the core and a hopeless cause-and that is the literal sense. In the spiritual sense, it was built by a corrupt man and is destined to destroy anyone who lives there.

Aside from these aspects, the characterizations are true to life. We sympathize with central family and with other victims of the house. They have their faults and their positive aspects, and at least one of the characters (besides the house) is a very evil man who gets what he deserves.

I won't go into any more detail about the story since that is Collings's job and he does it well. It's a thrilling and interesting story that can please horror fans young and old. Give it a try. You won't be disappointed.

Couldn't Put it Down 4 Mar 2011
By Valerie - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I finished this book the same day that I started it. The Slab reminded me of Stephen King's Misery--both of them compelled me to keep reading, despite the horror. I had to know what happened. I found myself holding my breath as I raced through pages of suspense. Collings has crafted a roller coaster of emotion for his readers, artfully playing upon our fears and sympathies for his characters. If you are easily spooked, don't read this alone at night. No matter your brand of horror--real life or supernatural--Collings weaves them all through this disturbing tale. In a word: Riveting. In a sentence: One seriously messed up tale.

Disappointing 23 July 2011
By Michael Husk - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
After reading the first two chapters, I was hooked. It seemed like it would be a creepy ghost story. But the Slab quickly fell apart into a slowly-moving, boring depiction of an irritable family. Some of the flashbacks were gratuitous about child abuse--particularly unnecessary because it did not move the plot along. What bothered me the most, though, was the lack of editing that completely permeated the prose. Toward the end every paragraph has multiple, glaring errors. I would not recommend this book.
