Product Description

"One of the sharpest minds and clearest voices writing today."

Hugh Howey, author of WOOL

****

Karma lives in a Silo deep beneath the earth. She isn't sure of much else… only that the wallscreen shows an outside view that is barren and swirling with toxic clouds. Most of the other residents seem content. Except for the ones who jump to their deaths from the hundred-level spiral staircase. And the ones who are pushed.

After the doctor prescribes a special medicine and tells her to avoid tap water, Karma begins to remember a very different world. Despite the fog in her mind, she is convinced that something came before. Such memories are dangerous to talk about, or even to think about.

She must figure out who can be trusted. The doctor… her husband… or no one at all.

This is a novella based on Hugh Howey's WOOL books, the first of five best-selling ebooks in the Karma series.

Karma of the Silo: The Collection, which includes all of the episodes in the Karma series, is now available as an ebook, to be followed by a print edition in the spring.

Praise for Patrice Fitzgerald and the Karma series

A definite PLUS to the Wooliverse, and a must read if you want to be well-versed in all things WOOL!

Michael Bunker, author of Dunes over Danvar, Pennsylvania, The Silo Archipelago, and WICK

The author does a fantastic job of retaining the atmosphere and claustrophobia of life underground and the characters are carefully constructed, exploring not only the effects of Silo life on the family dynamic, but the often complex relationships between the different Silo classes through the eyes of Karma and her family as she realises who she really is and has to decide whether to remain subdued and forget her past life, or choose a different path than the one chosen for her and challenge the status quo.

Eamon Ambrose, "Eamo the Geek"

Fitzgerald has created another masterpiece here. She has such an immediate style of writing which grips you from the start and takes you on a wild journey through the desperate lives of those living in the Silo.

W.J. Davies, author of The Runner and The Diver

I think I’m in love with Karma. I was curious about her life when Hugh Howey mentioned her in SHIFT. I highly recommend, not just this book, but this whole series!

Hanna Elizabeth, author of Visions of Wool

Fitzgerald’s characters come alive and threaten to leap off the page, they are so engaging.

Jerilyn Dufresne, author of Who Killed My Boss? Any Meat in that Soup? and the Sam Darling Mysteries

The Sky Used to be Blue manages the difficult feat of placing itself within the existing narrative, just like a missing piece of the great puzzle, and not just a parallel story or spinoff. It is well-written, gripping and filled with suspense. All the ingredients necessary are here: good writing, action and unexpected twists, characters you care about, and a deeper meaning.

Max Zaoui, critic extraordinaire

Patrice is a sci-fi, political thriller, and mystery writer who had a past as an intellectual property attorney. She also runs a niche indie publishing company and is a professional mezzo-soprano in her spare time. She's the Mom of four (pretty) adult children. She lives on the water in New England with her husband and is thrilled to be a successful indie writer.

More About the Author

Patrice Fitzgerald is in her third, fourth, or fifteenth act at this point. Writing and singing have always been part of her life, but she made a fifteen-year detour into practicing law. She got over it.

Her writing includes a dystopian series based on Hugh Howey's world of WOOL, tightly plotted and fast-paced novels like her political thriller "RUNNING," plus quirky short stories about sex, God, and death--not necessarily in that order--such as "Till Death Do Us Part" and "Looking for Lance." Her stories have appeared in a number of anthologies.

Patrice is currently at work writing the third book in the Karma series of stories set in the Silo. The first, "The Sky Used to be Blue," is on target to sell 2,000 copies in the first month, with the second, "Cleaning Up," due out before May 1. She is a professional mezzo-soprano who sings in styles ranging from opera and Broadway to jazz. Patrice is the mother of four fairly adult children, two by birth and two by marriage. She lives in Connecticut on the water with her wonderful singing, programming, writing and trumpet-playing husband. She is thrilled that RUNNING, her first published novel, has become a Kindle bestseller and has been read and enjoyed by people from all over the world.

Well, that was very unexpected...what a brilliant idea to follow one of Hugh Howey's characters. The writer totally captures the claustrophobic and sinister atmosphere of 'Wool'. Another enjoyable addition to the Wooliverse.

4.0 out of 5 stars i havent any wool! 17 Mar 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
this was a free download which i found well written and really enjoyed. i am aware of the best selling novel 'wool', butn admit to being one of the few who hasnt yet read it. when it was released i was interested, but at the time was totally fed up of post apocalypse stories so gave it a miss. i will at some point try the series this shot story is inspired by. i love the idea of other writers producing 'spin off' work from a strong best seller and applaude 'wool' author for allowing and even encouraging this latest writing phenomena. this short story of 'karmas' new awareness of life in the silos is touching and intriguing and i will be revisiting her soon. i shant stay too long however as im extremely claustrophobic! luckily the nature of these glimpses into silo life mean i will be able to pop in and out as i please!

5.0 out of 5 stars fantastic! 21 Jan 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
If the imagination of Hugh Howey gave us the world of the Silos, it is the wonderful writing of Patrice Fitzgerald that has brought it truly to life in a closely personal way. Patrice's first person style puts the reader into the mind and heart of Kara: we feel oppressed by her sense of imprisonment (the feeling of claustrophobia is evident in a way I never felt in these stories); we experience her roller coaster ride of emotions along her long life in the silo; we weep with her through her desperate helplessness; we rejoice with her as she achieves all that she does (no spoilers here - you will be inspired!). We are with her all the way to the end - and who of us would have done the same?
Anyone who has not read the brilliant Wool series - DO SO NOW! Then read the Karma series. Most Wonderful!
Thank you Patrice!

5.0 out of 5 stars Another good Silo related book
Well written believable story of a Silo resident who still remembers life up on top. What makes it even better is that she is one of characters in the original books.
