Product Description

Album Description

This is the debut disc from Albion Records which is part of the Vaughan Williams Society.

Albion Records Ltd, a not-for-profit record label, is dedicated to recording rare 20th century English classical music, concentrating on Ralph Vaughan Williams. The label is a subsidiary of the Ralph Vaughan Williams Society and each of the CDs will contain world premiere recordings.

This first CD issued by Albion Records, 'The Sky Shall Be Our Roof', comprises of 19 songs from Ralph Vaughan Williams operas. An astonishing 12 of these songs are world premiere recordings and all are deeply characteristic, in turn noble and beautiful. The disc boasts the talents of Iain Burnside, Roderick Williams, Juliette Pochin, Sarah Fox and Andrew Staples.

It will be followed by 'To Daffodils', a collection of early Vaughan Williams songs. One, "Rondel", is unpublished and unrecorded; it is serenely beautiful and is as it was written when the composer was only 22. It will change perceptions of the quality of music Vaughan Williams was composing at this early age.

Albion will then turn its attention to the unrecorded piano transcriptions of Vaughan Williams, for release next year.

Recorded 2007

Personnel:
Sara Fox - (soprano), Juliette Pochin - (mezzo-soprano), Andrew Staples - (tenor), Roderick Williams - (baritone), Iain Burnside - (piano)

This disc has blown me away and would be my choice for Disc of the Year - and it is only February. I am not over keen on the music of RVW but purchased this disc out of curiosity. It has some of the most beautiful English song I have ever heard on it. Quite simply at times it is ravishing and a joy to listen to. There are so many highlights on it it seems unfair to pick one out but I will - "O the sky shall be our roof" is a soaring duet of love.

Why has so much of this music not been recorded before? Glyndebourne take note there are works here that need to be performed and I will be first in line for tickets to see these operas in performance.

Thanks to the RVW society for putting this CD out. Don't hesitate, buy it!
