Product Description

Product Description

In April 1997 Camilla Carr and Jon James set off as volunteers in a £500 lada stacked high with toys, games, footballs, paints and a parachute. After working for two months setting up and teaching in a rehabilitation centre for war-traumatised children watching the children begin to smile and play again they were kidnapped. There followed fourteen months of incarceration in homes that varied from a concrete box with no natural light or fresh air to a pink trompe l oeil bedroom via a sauna and various cellars. They experienced everything from rape and mental torture to moments of compassion and kindness. They survived by using tools such as tai chi, yoga, meditation and humour; and through creating a dialogue with their captors, looking beneath their masks of fear and anger to reach the small flame of love and laughter unquenched by the demonising nature of war.

About the Author

Camilla Carr and Jonathan James who married after their release and return to Britain are active participants in The Forgiveness Project, a touring exhibition and workshop which enables those who have been either victims or perpetrators of violence tell their stories and rebuild their lives. Excellent 22 April 2008
Format:Paperback
Brave to have to written this gripping, gruelling, moving account of surviving a kidnapping in Chechnya; not a place for the weak hearted but the brave. This work will be well read; it has already been well reviewed by Times 2 and was read on BBC Radio 4. Camilla Carr and Jonathan James deserve to have a lot of success with this book which gives people eternal hope and demonstrates how the spirit can survive even the most dire situations. It is also a book about the meaning of 'togetherness'.

What an inspiration 25 May 2008
Format:Paperback
I've just finished reading this - it's amazing, inspiring, moving. I'm lucky enough to know Jon and Camilla personally and already had huge respect for them, but reading the details of their time in captivity has increased that respect tenfold. Reading about the ways they applied their creativity and spirituality in surviving and forgiving their captors has re-inforced my faith in the power and efficacy of these tools. Highly recommended!

Format:Paperback
A courageous and skilfully written book which draws you so directly into the bodies, hearts, minds and souls of the authors that you ride the emotional roller coaster with them at every stage. I was deeply moved by their open and honest self-revelation, both through their ordeal and after their release.
Not only should we all read this book and learn from it, but more importantly we should encourage everyone else to buy it because it's not in the nature of the authors to be self-publicists and they continue to be busy with their good work in the community You can guarantee that any profits made will be put to good use.
