5.0 out of 5 stars Read this book if you are going to help others! 28 Feb 2001
Format:Hardcover
An excellent treatment of counselling. Egan is a plain talking, not-too-jargonistic author who tells it like it is. Counselling is a skill and to help others you want the right tools. When you read this book you will have the foundation necessary to help others and yourself.
A must read for anyone studying Hypnotherapy, Psychotherapy, Counselling, Reiki, Healing, Teaching, Management, etcetera.
A larger sized version with thicker paper and slightly larger type is on my wish-list.

the Egan "model" illustrated in this book helps immensely. Each aspect of the illustrated "model" is presented in a step-by-step process and easy to read manner. Quite appropriate for students learning to be therapists or counsellors. i hope that Egan continues to develop the graphics aspect of illustrating the "model" further refining the already excellant presentation of the "model" of the helping process purported. Any book with Egan's name on it as author is well worth looking into as a counsellor's or therapist's referrence source. Nicely done.

`A treasure trove of helping skills made accessible for all.'
This is what I would say if I were asked to sum this book up in one sentence.

Gerard Egan
Has a wealth of knowledge that he seamlessly passes onto the reader. Through the text you can see the humanness of the man and the compassion and skill of the helper.

Contents
It is very easy to see what is in this book due to the extensive `contents' layout.
The book is split into six parts, see below. Under each heading it is very clear what is included; it takes you through a journey from starting as a helper right through to how you as the helper can make a difference in your client's life by motivating them to bring change into their life.

Part One
Laying the Groundwork

Part Two
Basic Communication Skills for Helping

Part Three
Stage 1: of the Helping Model and Advanced Communication Skills

Part Four
Stage 2: Helping Clients Determine What they Need and Want

Part Five
Stage 3: Helping Clients Work for What they Need and Want

Part Six
The Action Arrow: Making It All Happen

Readability and Style
The first couple of chapters seem quite heavy with references which could put you off, however don't be, as you will be rewarded when reading this book right through to insights, that can't be bought.

This book is written in a very practical way with the text interspersed continually with counselling sessions. The good part is that Egan gives you what you should and should not say thus making it a very workable book.

The other very helpful thing Egan has included is a chapter summary at the beginning of each chapter.
