NEW EDITION

‘Magic that takes you out, far out, of this time and this world.'
George Bernard Shaw, after a visit to Skellig

This is the story of two of the world's most stunning and unspoilt islands,Skellig Michael and Small Skellig, which lie off the coast of Kerry.Lavelle explores the extraordinary, isolated Early Christian monastic settlement with its stone ‘beehive' huts. He describes the abundant bird life, including the huge colony of gannets, and tells of the history, legend, geology, plant life, the lighthouse, the seals and the underwater world.

A comprehensive and accessible book on a unique and fascinating place.

About the Author

Des Lavelle is a veteran of many years of the Skellig islands and is the son, grandson, and great grandson of a lighthouse family. Author, historian, diver, photographer, lecturer and ornithologist, he runs regular tours of the islands during the Summer. His intimate knowledge of the islands, his passion for island photography and his live slide presentations about the Skelligs have taken him on lecture tours all over Europe and to about thirty cities of the USA.

His website contains more information about Des and the islands.

Read this before you visit Skellig

This book is drawn from the lifetime work of Des Lavelle

I would recommend to anyone planning to visit the Skellig to read this fantastic guide before travelling.

It offers a comprehensive history of the Islands, information about the monastery and an interesting overview of the animals and plants that the visitor is likely to enjoy.

It is illustrated with interesting maps , graphs and black and white and colour photographs.

Bless the Skellig Monks 11 Jan 2010

There are not many books on the Irish monastic outpost on Skellig Michael, but this one will give you a tantalizing glimpse with some great pictures and text by Des Lavelle. Lavelle has guided many visitors to the Skelligs and his photos and texts are used in the Visitors Centre 13km away on Valentia Island. This book contains information on the birds, marine life, archaeological remains and the history of the lighthouse. Well worth the price.
