From Amazon.co.uk

M Night Shyamalan's The Sixth Sense sets itself up as a thriller, poised on the brink of delivering monstrous scares, but gradually evolves into more of a psychological drama with supernatural undertones. Many critics faulted the film for being mawkish and New Agey, but no matter how you slice it, this is one mightily effective piece of filmmaking. The bare bones of the story are basic enough, but the moody atmosphere created by Shyamalan and cinematographer Tak Fujimoto made this one of the creepiest pictures of 1999, one that forsakes excessive gore for a sinisterly simple feeling of chilly otherworldliness.

Bruce Willis is in his strong, silent type mode here, and gives the film wholly over to Haley Joel Osment, whose crumpled face and big eyes convey a child too wise for his years; his scenes with his mother (Toni Collette) are small, heartbreaking marvels. And even if you figure out the film's surprise ending, it packs an amazing emotional wallop when it comes; it will have you racing to watch the movie again with a new perspective. You may be able to shake off the sentimentality of The Sixth Sense, but its craftsmanship and atmosphere will stay with you for days. --Mark Englehart

Product Description

Child psychologist Malcolm Crowe (Bruce Willis) is shot by a former patient, who then kills himself. Feeling responsible for the death, Crowe sees a chance to assuage his guilt by helping the troubled young Cole Sear (Haley Joel Osment), who claims to be haunted by ghosts. As the bond between the doctor and his charge grows, Crowe becomes more and more estranged from his wife, who he suspects of having an affair. This psychological drama features one of Hollywood's most celebrated twist endings.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best films in recent times 20 July 2003
Format:DVD
The Sixth Sense is an absolute gem, it is one of those challenging films that will stick in your mind and have you thinking about it for weeks after watching it. The plot is downright genuis, it`s so cleverly and precisely orchestrated that the resulting twist will just leave your jaw rightfully on the floor! The twist is so shocking, I will avoid the overwhelming temptation to give it away, watching it in ignorance will ultimately have the best effect. The cast is superb, Hollywood superstar Bruce Willis gives a refreshing change of pace performance as award winning child psychologist Dr. Malcolm Crowe. Joining him is the critically acclaimed child actor Haley Joel Osment, last seen in Artificial Intelligence. The acting talents of this young boy are phenomenal, I have never seen such powerful presence, he is mature beyond his years.Haley thoroughly deserved recognition in the form of an Oscar nomination for his role as `Cole`; a gifted young boy with the exceptional ability of having the sixth sense. Possessing this gift however only serves to create fear in the mind of a nine year old, and scepticism in everyone around him. Cole experiences terrifying, unwanted visits from the spiritual world, which inevitably leads to his social isolation. Dr. Crowe recognises Coles behaviour, and remembers many years back when he had a patient with the same symptoms. This patient however left a painful impact on his conscience, as he was unable to help. Dr. Crowe then seeks to redeem himself by doing everything in his power to help troubled Cole.As Cole is alone in seeing and hearing these suffering spirits, it is also he who must help them rest. To do this Cole must confront his nightmare. It is only with Dr. Crowe`s suggestion to listen to them, he makes the discovery that they are not there to haunt him, but instead only want his assistance in their unfinished business. With the riveting intensity you`ll find thoroughly chilling and utterly forgettable, The Sixth Sense is a must see movie. The 2 disc collectors edition has wonderful special features, including exclusive interviews with the cast and writer/director.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thank you, Thank you, Thank you 3 Feb 2009
Format:DVD
Having just finished watching the movie I feel compelled to write this review, a meagre attempt to give something back to the makers of the movie. This is one of the hardest reviews i've ever tried to write, words do not seem capable of conveying the ingenuity and beauty of the Sixth Sense. I'm not going to talk about the plot, to analyse it would give away too much, so this leaves only my feelings about the film to convince you.

I still feel somewhat shell shocked by its intelligence. I know such words are not those one would normally associate with a film of its kind but that's what makes the Sixth Sense different. The plot is what binds it to the supernatural/suspense genre, but the actual story makes it so much more. Take Poltergiest, Ghost and Good Will Hunting, these are three very different films, each a classic in their own right. If you were to mix these you might end up with something close to the Sixth Sense: an original supernatural thriller, with excellent character development and relationships which is not too big to have an element of romance. Brilliant displays by Bruce Willis and Haley Joel Osment gives the film its edge.

Technically the Dvd is also faultless. Picture and sound quality are excellent and the special features have thoughtfully been put together.

I can offer you no more than my assurance that this is a film that I believe will appeal to all. It is an emotional journey, which will leave a lump in the throat and a chill in the spine of even the most hardened of persons... if not, check your pulse!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great moviemaking 6 Feb 2004
Format:DVD
Forget anything negative you may have heard from "clever" critics, this is a sensational debut from young filmmaker M.Night Shyamalan.
Yes it is all a build up to a twist, but what a twist !!!
I have never watched a film with a more stunning moment of realisation than this, it only asks that you sit back and enjoy the ride, it is a piece of entertainment after all.
Add in great acting from Bruce Willis and the extrordinary Haley Joel Osment, and this is an altogether unforgetable movie.

Only one problem though .. how on earth does the director follow it up ? up till now the answer is, he can't.
