I suspect there will be a number of 50-somethings who like myself, spent their teen years following this series through most of the 70's. I must confess that I hadn't seen any of the episodes since their original broadcast until buying the Universal/Playback R2 release of season one a few years ago. Rediscovering the series again, the stories and action seem to unfold at a more relaxed pace than my memory would have me believe - no bad thing of course, just like meeting a long-lost friend in my case.

The series kicks off with Colonel Steve Austin (Lee Majors) barely clinging on to life following a near-fatal crash involving a NASA aircraft. His shattered legs, arm, and an eye are replaced with astronomically expensive bionic limbs & an ultra-sensitive eye (hence the 'Six Million Dollar' title) developed by the US government. The new anatomical additions mean that Austin is now "better, stronger, faster" than ever before. Austin's 'debt' for these revolutionary replacements is to be repaid by Austin agreeing to work for the government's OSI division, whose director, Oscar Goldman (Richard Anderson) sends Austin on various secret missions.

What follows is a collection of mostly 50-minute episodes, with themes including espionage, sci-fi (aliens, 'Bigfoot' etc) but generally 'human' stories. Austin really isn't your stereotypical all-action hero with girls swooning at his feet, but is more a down-to-earth & reserved but friendly individual, with the 'bionic' angle used sparingly & not as a gimmicky crowd-pleaser. I've grown very fond of Lee Majors' understated performance as the reluctant superhero with super-strength.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quality Extra Laden Boxset 15 Feb 2014
By timelord007 TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:DVD
Dvd Info.
40 discs.
5 seasons.
100 episodes
Running time 60 minutes per episode.
3 feature length pilots.
3 tv movie's.
Interviews with Lee Majors & Lindsay Wagner.
17 featurettes.
Episode booklet guide.
Stills gallery.
Digitally Remastered Picture & sound.
Full uncut episode's.

Trivia.
1)This is based on the novel Cyborg by Martin Caldin.
2)Lee Majors did 90% of his own stunts.
3)Writer Martin Caldin wanted Monte Markham for Steve Austin, Markham went onto appear in 2 episode's as Barney Miller The Seven Million Dollar Man.
4)Producer Harve Bennett did the series opening voiceover.
5)Harve Bennett went on to produce Star Trek movie's 2-6.
6)Lee Majors refused To film any scenes of season 5 until his salary demands were met, Producers thought of recasting the role & considered actor's Gil Gerard(Buck Rogers) & Harrison Ford who was told he didn't cut it as a action star. (He proved them wrong didn't me).
7)Steve Austin's boss Darryl McGavin who played Oliver Spencer in the shows pilot was replaced by Richard Anderson as Oscar Goldman who runs the government OSI agency when it went to series.
8)3 actor's have played Doctor Rudy Wells, Martin Balsam, Alan Oppenhelmer & Martin E.Brooks.
9)A spin off series was created with Jamie Sommers who was Steve Austin's girlfriend whom suffered a near fatal parachute accident, The spin off titled The Bionic Woman lasted for 3 seasons & 58 episode's which starred Lindsay Wagner & Richard Anderson.

Review.
After Astronaut Steve Austin is fatally wounded after his ship crashes down to Earth he loses both legs an arm & the use of his eye in the horrific accident.

5.0 out of 5 stars At Last!!!! 17 Nov 2011
Format:DVD
Great to see that this is finally being released - about time! I have purchased the set from Time Life at an extortianate price, but had to have it at all costs, as I didn't think we'd ever see it here.

If it lives up to the same quality and features of the American release, then it'll be a steal at 104 quid!

BUY IT!!
