Product Description

From the Back Cover

The Situational Judgement Test at a Glance provides a sound introduction to the SJT and details ways you can prepare before the assessment. It includes worked case examples based on real–life scenarios which have been reviewed by experienced clinicians and examiners. The book draws out key aspects of professional practice relevant to the role of a junior doctor. This is based on the nine domains as outlined by the ISFP (Improving Selection to Foundation Programme), who detailed the behaviours necessary to be a competent Foundation Doctor. The overall aim of The Situational Judgement Test at a Glance is not to spoon feed hundreds of practice questions or reams of guidelines, but to steer you towards a logical way of approaching best medical practice – and therefore the SJT – with many examples of doctors′ personal experiences along the way. Challenging scenarios are analysed using guidelines from the General Medical Council and research interviews with patients, lab staff and healthcare professionals. All examples in the book are worked in a test–style apparatus, with questions on one side and detailed answers over the page so you can understand the reasoning behind the material.

There are many titles on the market claiming to be for medical students to help you to prepare for the SJT but all of them were written prior to the first SJT being sat and as such all of them are 'best guesses' on what the style will be in the exam. This title does have some useful features in that it prepares you for the type of thinking out of the box and getting you a little less psyched up about the exam beforehand. In my opinion and having talked to many of my colleagues however I would not encourage you to purchase this title unless you really feel that it would ease your nerves, you would be better to spend more time on the wards, in A&E/AMU/ASU as this would mean that you are used to these decisions being made in the clinical setting.

this is a good guide for SJT. It gives you a good general understanding of what to be aware of for the exam, as well as useful examples and situations. I had another book as well as this one, but ended up ditching the other to just look at this one, as it was much more use and not at all misleading (unlike the other book!).
If you wanted a book, i would recommend this. However now i have done the exam, i'm certain its more down to gut feeling than anything else

Thought that this would help me out for the SJT exam but in actual fact all it is is just a rehashed GMC guidance in "At a glance" series prettiness.
There werent too many sample questions neither. If you want to buy this and the ISC medical SJT book, but definitely not this book by itself.

They say you can't prepare for the SJT, but I still think that it's useful to do some preparation. I mean at least make an effort to find out what they test you on and how they test you. This book covers the domains that they test you in the SJT. It's very well written with real life situations quoted thoughout the book. I'd definitely recommend this book!

A good hook for general info on the role of the fy1 butu don't think it helped with th sjt at all and the example questions were not all that comparable. But still one of the better books if you really want to buy one.

This is a good book in general however you can't use this alone to prepare for the SJT. Need a question book to supplemnt it.

I've just sat the Dec 2013 SJT and this book is okay-ish.

It contains chapters with headings like 'professionalism', 'effective teamwork', 'effective communication', etc. GMC guidance is woven into a lot of these chapters. There's a section of practice questions at the end.

If you've spent decent time on the wards or glanced at the GMC guidance, none of the content in this book will be new.

In all honesty, I don't think it helped me one bit for the SJT. The only thing that did was going through the one practice paper and really making sure I understood every single rationale for the right answers.

The other thing which bugged me about this book is the horrible, cheaply done cartoons and illustrations - the entire book feels like it was made on a budget of about 30p.

If you must buy a SJT book, this is the best of a bad bunch, but I'm not sure I'd even bother.

This book is not enough on its own.... but in conjunction with the oxford handbook for SJT it is ideal. At a glance tends to explain things and give good examples that make doing the questions a lot more straight forward,,,
