Amazon.co.uk Review

The immensely versatile Pete Postlethwaite stars in The Sins, a seven-part serio-comic drama set amongst London's criminal fraternity, with each episode taking as its loose theme one of the seven deadly sins. Postlethwaite, who seems able to shine in anything from Hollywood blockbusters to low-budget Brit flicks, stars as Len Green, an ex-con getaway driver who shocks his friends and family when, on release from a four-year stretch, he denounces his former life of crime in favour of more cultured endeavours. Whilst this decision, and the effects it has on those close to him, forms the story arc, the real meat of the series is to be found in his relationships with his wife (played by the perennially excellent and hugely underrated Geraldine James), his daughters--Faith, Hope, Charity and Chastity--his surrogate son, Carl and, perhaps, most importantly, his uncle and mentor, Irwin (Frank Finlay). Each case of temptation and sin is examined in turn (all handled by different directors but remaining part of a cohesive whole), as Len's rose-tinted view of his family life is gradually shattered by a series of harsh home truths. There's plenty of comedy throughout, much of it stemming from Len's new career as an undertaker, but it takes actors of Postlethwaite, Finlay and James' stature to handle the often abrupt shifts from light to shade as the series progresses into a darker place. Perfectly rounded (no chance of a second series, given the nature of the denouement), the extended format enables Postlethwaite to develop and enhance his character in a way that no two-hour film could ever offer. The producers even had the good taste to include a Tindersticks song as the theme. --Phil Udell

From the Back Cover

Starring Pete Postlethwaite, Geraldine James, Frank Finlay, Claire Rushbrook, Kaye Wragg, Neil Stuke, Laura Rogers, Caroline Hayes and Charlie Creed-Miles.

Len Green is a man in crisis. After four and a half years in prison and having more than provided for his family during a lifetime of crime, he's decided to go straight and earn an honest living. But how will his wife, Gloria and daughters, Faith, Hope, Chastity, Charity and Dolores, adjust to their new found, and much less influential, status? And will it really be so easy for Len to resist the temptations offered by his criminal past, particularly when his old cohorts are so reluctant to let him go? His only salvation is his Uncle Irwin, who offers him his long-established undertaking business as a means to an honest living. As Len confronts each sin, Irwin remains confident that he will learn one thing above all else: that the greatest virtue of all in life - and death - is love.

The Sins explores the seven deadly sins through the experiences of Len Green, a career criminal. Sloth was particularly interesting in that this episode examined this state, concluding a rather different deeper interpretation than mere laziness. Len is a hero of sorts having to confront each week and somewhat understand or master these elementary conditions that befall us all.. Liked the fact that it was not moralistic and took a broader perspective of the human condition. Pity it took the death of Peter Postlethwaite to get this production onto DVD, more than a decade after its original television release. Highly recommended.

I was surprisingly totally captivated by this series. The whole cast was fantastic. The characters of Len Green and Uncle Urwin were so convincing and the most effective thing is how Green seems to have represented the temptation to the sins and in return how Uncle Urwin would provide the wisdom and explanation. A joy to watch. Congratulations!

As suggested, this is an entire series, consisting of 7 episodes on 2 cassettes, which covers each of the 7 deadly sins. A quite wonderful series, whether a fan of Pete P. or otherwise. The writing for starters is truly inspired/ & inspiring, touching on many subjects entirely connected with being a human being...subjects that matter, like love, death, friendship, family. Combine such emotive language with the delivery from a brilliant cast of actors & actresses(or are both just termed actors these days?), & you`ll be weeping like Niagra Falls. So, plenty of loo-roll is mandatory. Well worth the price-tag.
